(Mishnah): They handed over to him Zekenim from the Zekenim of Beis Din. They read in front of him Seder ha'Yom, and say to him "Ishi Kohen Gadol, read with your mouth - perhaps you forgot, or you did not learn!''

Erev Yom Kipur in the morning they stand him up in the eastern gate and pass in front of him bulls, rams and lambs, so he will recognize [them] and be accustomed to Avodah.

(Gemara) Question: [Why does it say] perhaps you forgot, or you did not learn''? Was it not taught "veha'Kohen ha'Gadol me'Echav'' - his greatness over his brethren is in the following ways - "Asher Yutzak Al Rosho Shemen ha'Mishchah'';

Rebbi says, he is greater in beauty (form), Ko'ach, wealth, Chachmah and [facial] appearance.

Answer (R. Yosi bei R. Bun): [The Drashah that he is greater in all these ways, including Chachmah, was fulfilled] in Bayis Rishon. [Our Mishnah] discusses Bayis Sheni (when Kohanim were appointed through bribery).

(Mishnah): They stand him up in the eastern gate.

Question: Where do they stand him up - inside or outside?

If you will say that it is outside, it is like what a Mishnah taught there "there were five Tevilos that day. One is because a person would not enter the Azarah for Avodah, even if he was Tahor, until he immersed'', and four were for Yom Kipur. (He stood outside because one may not enter the Azarah without Tevilah, even not for the sake of Avodah. If so, the first Tevilah of Yom Kipur is due to entering the Azarah, and not due to Yom Kipur);

If you will say that it is inside [this shows that one may enter the Azarah not for the sake of Avodah without Tevilah, for it does not say that he immersed], all [five Tevilos of Yom Kipur] were due to Yom Kipur. (We explained according to YEFE EINAYIM 31a.)

(Mishnah): They pass in front of him bulls, rams and lambs.

Question: Why doesn't it say a goat?

Answer #1 (R. Ba Kartinga): Even without this, he does not need arousal [for a goat. It is the primary Kaparah of the day!]

Answer #2: We find a Tana who teaches [also] a goat.

(Mishnah): All seven days they would not withhold from him food and drink. On Erev Yom Kipur close to dark, they did not let him eat much, for food brings sleep.

(Gemara - Beraisa): They did not let him eat milk, eggs, cheese, fatty meat, old wine, wine mixed with honey and spices, grits of beans, or lentils (for these lead to emissions).

Shmuel says, [they did not let him eat] Esrog, and not anything that leads to Zivah.

Even so, they applied to him this verse "Im Hash-m Lo Yivneh Bayis... [Im Hash-m Lo Yishmor Ir Shav Shaked Shomer]'' (even though they are so careful about what he eats, Hash-m must guard him).

Question: Was this not among the miracles in the Beis ha'Mikdash (that the Kohen Gadol never has an emission on Yom Kipur? Why did they need to be so careful about what he eats?)

Answer #1 (R. Avin): This is due to "Lo Tenasun'' (do not test Hash-m, i.e. do not rely on a miracle).

Answer #2 (R. Yosi bei R. Bun): [The miracle was fulfilled] in Bayis Rishon. [Our Mishnah] discusses Bayis Sheni.
