(According to HAGAHOS YA'AVETZ, he came from the city of Gimzo, mentioned in Divrei ha'Yamim II 28:18. His title, "Ish Gam Zu," was given to him because of his practice to say "Gam Zu l'Tovah" ("This also is for the good") about any occurrence, regardless of how disastrous it may have seemed. The Chachamim refer to him as "Ish Gam Zu" as a play on words, incorporating the name of his town (Gimzo) into his outlook on life (Gam Zu).
