(a)Menasheh was the longest reigning king in Jewish history. Unfortunately, during much of that time he indulged in multiple sins of the worst kind, as the verse relates. He angered HaSh-m by indulging in all of the abominations for which the original inhabitants of Eretz Yisrael were expelled. The Navi presents a list of the evil deeds that Menasheh perpetrated: he rebuilt the Bamos that his father Chizkiyahu had destroyed, he built altars to Ba'al, he planted an Asheirah as Achav, king of Yisrael, had done, and he prostrated himself to all of the heavenly bodies. He constructed altars in honor of all the heavenly bodies and placed them in the courtyards of the Beis ha'Mikdash. In addition, he passed his son through the fires of Molech and indulged in numerous kinds of witchcraft and sorcery. All this he did deliberately to anger HaSh-m. He also manufactured an image for the Asheirah that he had planted, which he also placed in the Beis ha'Mikdash. His most treacherous deed, however, was that he led Yisrael astray to the point that they became worse than the nations that had preceded them, and he caused the whole of Yehudah to sin as well.
(b)His sins were not confined to idolatry in all its forms. He was also guilty of spilling innocent blood, and went so far as to kill his own grandfather, Yeshayah ha'Navi. Again, the people followed his example, and Yerushalayim became filled with murder "from one end to the other."
(c)As a result of Yehudah's numerous sins, HaSh-m sent messages through the Nevi'im who prophesied at that time (Yo'el, Nachum, and Chavakuk) that He had decided to destroy Yerushalayim just as He had destroyed Yisrael. He would deliver His people into the hands of their enemies who would trample and despoil them.
(d)Menasheh repented for a period of 33 years. However, the evil that he perpetrated had done so much harm that his repentance sufficed only to reinstate him on his throne, but not to earn him a portion in the World to Come (according to the opinion of the Chachamim).
