OTHER AFFLICTIONS FOR WHICH WE BLOW THE SHOFAR (Yerushalmi Halachah 6 Daf 15b)

(a)

(Mishnah): We blow the Shofar for the following everywhere - for Shidafon (wind-blasted crops) and Yerakon (jaundice), for Arbeh and Chasil (species of locusts), for wild animals and the sword, we blow the Shofar, for it is an affliction that moves.

(b)

(Gemara - R. Chama bar Ukva citing R. Yosi ben Chaninah): We blow the Shofar for birds that ate flax. What is the reason? "Shamah v'Sha'arurah (astounding and revolting) Nihyesah ba'Aretz.''

(c)

(R. Shmuel bar Nachman citing R. Yonason): We blow the Shofar for a heat wave. What is the reason? "Koder Hilachti b'Lo Chamah (I am blackened without the sun) Kamti va'Kahal Ashave'a.''

(d)

(R. Lazar): Honor the doctor (pray to Hash-m) before you need him. What is the source? "Ha'Ya'aroch Shu'acha Lo v'Tzar (pray when you are not in pain) v'Chol Ma'amatzei Ko'ach.''

(e)

R. Yochanan and Reish Lakish [argued about this]. R. Yochanan said, if you arranged your prayer, you will not have stinginess from above. Rather, all would strengthen you - "v'Chol Ma'amatzei Ko'ach'';

1.

Reish Lakish said, if you arranged your prayer, you would not constrict your mouth. Rather, you would widen your mouth, and I would fill it.

(f)

(The Mishnah said that we blow the Shofar for Arbeh.) It is not only for Arbeh (all species of locusts came), rather, even for Kenaf (one species).

(g)

Why is [one species] called Chasil? It finishes off (consumes) everything. Why is [one species] called Govai? It collects the debt owed (what people are liable) to its Master.

(h)

(The Mishnah said that we blow the Shofar for evil Chayos.) It is not only for evil Chayos (wild animals), rather, even for evil Behemos;

1.

There were already years in Eretz Yisrael when a donkey bit and killed, and an ox bit and killed.

(i)

(The Mishnah said that we blow the Shofar for the sword.) It is not only for a sword of [a nation that wants to make] war, rather, even for a sword of Shalom (a nation at peace with you that wants to make war with another nation). It already made an impression [of its danger] in the days of [Melech] Yoshiyah.

2)

FASTS DECREED FOR SHIDAFON AND CHAYOS (Yerushalmi Halachah 7 Daf 15b)

(a)

(Mishnah): A case occurred in which Chachamim descended from Yerushalayim and decreed a fast because a full oven's volume of Shidafon was seen in Ashkelon.

1.

They further decreed a fast the next day because wolves ate two children in Ever ha'Yarden;

2.

R. Yosi says, it was not because they ate, rather, because they were seen.

(b)

(Gemara): This (the Shi'ur of a full oven of Shidafon) is when it is in one place, but if it is scattered, we blow the Shofar even for less than this.

(c)

Opinion #1 (R. Mana): [R. Yosi says that the wolves] were seen chasing after [people].

(d)

Opinion #2 (R. Yosi bei R. Bun): They were seen in a place not proper for them.

3)

MASRI'IM ON SHABBOS (Yerushalmi Halachah 8 Daf 16a)

(a)

(Mishnah): For the following, we are Masri'a (blow the Shofar) on Shabbos - for a city surrounded by Nochrim or a river [about to flood it], or for a boat about to capsize in the sea.

(b)

R. Yosi says, [we are Masri'a to call people to come] to help, but not to pray [for them].

(c)

Shimon ha'Temani says, [we are Masri'a] even for Dever. Chachamim did not agree with him.

(d)

(Gemara - Rav): [Masri'a does not mean to blow the Shofar. Rather, we pray for them,] Aneni Hash-m Aneni.

(e)

Objection: Our Mishnah argues with Rav! R. Yosi says, [we are Masri'a] for help, but not to pray. This implies that the first Tana holds that it is even for prayer (i.e. Masri'a is blowing the Shofar)!

(f)

Troops came to the city of Levi ben Sisi. He took a Sefer Torah and ascended to the top of the roof. He said, Master of the worlds! If I was Mevatel one word of this Sefer Torah, the troops should enter. If not, they should leave. Immediately, they wanted to find them, and they could not.

(g)

His Talmid did so. His hand dried (this was a punishment, for he was not so worthy), and they went away.

(h)

The Talmid of his Talmid did so. His hand did not dry, and they did not go away. This shows that a lunatic does not [feel when he] gets injured, and dead flesh does not feel the knife [that cuts it. He did not realize his sin, therefore he was not punished.]
