SUKAH 36 (4 Elul 5781) - Dedicated l'Iluy Nishmas Chaim Yisachar (ben Yaakov) Smulewitz of Cleveland on his Yahrzeit, by his son in law, Jeri & Eli Turkel of Raanana, Israel.

1)

THE LAWS OF THE ESROG (Cont'd) (Yerushalmi Halachah 6 Daf 15a)

(a)

If the Esrog had a hole that did not penetrate the central chamber, it is valid.

(b)

This follows our Mishnah that states that if its Ukatz was removed or it had a hole but was not lacking anything, it is valid.

(c)

If a black Esrog grew in a place where Esrogim are usually green, it is invalid. But if the Esrog actually grew in the Land of Kush where they are usually black, it is valid.

(d)

The Mishnah had taught: An Esrog that is green like a leek is the subject of a dispute.

(e)

Query (R. Zeira to R. Imi): In order for R. Yehuda to disqualify, must it be exactly the color of a leek, or is it invalid even if it is like the color of a leek?

(f)

Answer: It must be exactly like a leek to be invalid.

(g)

Question: (The Tosefta in Negaim (1,3), in reference to a colored mark found on the a garment or leather, states that only a 'green of greens' or 'red of reds' color causes the Tumah of Negaims. The Tosefta asks, what is 'green of greens' (Yerakrak Shebayerokim)?

1.

Answer #1: R. Elazar says that it is like wax and like the Karmel (a place of vegetation) rose. (Note: According to the Pnei Moshe, Karmel is a type of grass.)

2.

Answer#2: Sumchus said that it is like peacock wings.

3.

What is 'red of reds' (Adamdam Sheba'adomim)? Deep crimson.

(h)

Question: The Tosefta describes green as the color of wax (yellowy); but here, our Mishnah describes green as the color of a leek?

(i)

Answer (R. Pinchas): The Tosefta is describing "Yerakrak"; our Mishnah is describing "Yarok".

2)

THE SIZE OF AN ESROG (Yerushalmi Halachah 7 Daf 15a)

(a)

(Mishnah): The minimum size of an Esrog -

1.

R. Meir says - the size of a nut.

2.

R. Yehuda says - the size of an egg.

(b)

The maximum size of an Esrog -

1.

R. Yehuda says - as long as he is able to hold the Esrog and the Lulav at the same time, it is valid.

2.

R. Yosi says - even if it is so large that he must hold it in both his hands, it is valid.

(c)

(Gemara - Beraisa): A Boser Esrog (not fully grown) -

1.

R. Akiva says that it is not a fruit (and may not be used for the Mitzvah of the four species).

2.

Chachamim say that it is a fruit (and may be used).

(d)

R. Ila/ R. Yasa quoting R. Elazar: R. Shimon follows the opinion of his teacher R. Akiva - just as R. Akiva says that a Boser Esrog is not a fruit, R. Shimon says that a Boser Esrog is not a fruit (in the Mishnah in Maseches Maaseros where R. Shimon rules that a Boser Esrog is exempt from Maaser because it is not a fruit).

(e)

Question: Are you suggesting that any fruit that is valid to use as the Four Species is obligated in Maaseros and if not, it is not obligated?

1.

Conclusion of question: A patchy Esrog, an Esrog that grew in a mould, and an Esrog that is the shape of a ball are all invalid but they are obligated in Maaseros!

(f)

It is logical to say that R. Shimon agrees with R. Akiva but R. Akiva does not agree with R. Shimon -

1.

R. Shimon agrees with R. Akiva, as the Pasuk says "fruit" in reference to the Esrog, and this Esrog cannot be classified as a fruit.

2.

R. Akiva does not agree with R. Shimon, as a patchy Esrog, an Esrog that grew in a mould, and an Esrog that is the shape of a ball are all invalid but they are obligated in Maaseros.

(g)

Our Mishnah taught that the minimum size of an Esrog is the size of a nut. There is a Beraisa that teaches that the minimum size is until the size of a nut.

(h)

The Mishnah rules that if the Esrog is exactly the same size as a nut, it is valid. The Beraisa rules that until the size of a nut is valid, but not if it is as small as a nut itself.

(i)

R. Yosa: (Regarding the end of the Mishnah that discussed the maximum size of an Esrog) If the Pasuk would have stated, "...V'Kapos Temarim (and a Lulav branch)" I would understand that he must be able to hold it in one hand together with the Esrog; but since the Pasuk states "Kapos Temarim", it is sufficient if he can hold one in each hand.

(j)

They say that R. Akiva once entered the Synagogue with a (very large) Esrog resting on his shoulder.
