MATTERS USED IN LIEU OF SHOES (Yerushalmi Halachah 8 Daf 38a)

(a)

(Mishnah - R. Yosi): One who is missing a foot may go out with a Kav (false foot. It houses what remains of his leg);

(b)

R. Meir forbids. (It is not a Tachshit.)

(c)

If it has a receptacle for tufts [for his leg to rest on] it is Tamei.

(d)

[If he is missing both feet and walks on his knees,] his Semuchos (leather that he puts under his knees) are Mekabel Tum'as Medras. He may go out with them on Shabbos. He may enter the Azarah with them.

(e)

[If he is missing both feet and cannot walk on his knees,] his chair and its Semuchos are Mekabel Tum'as Medras. He may not go out with them on Shabbos, and he may not enter the Mikdash with them. (They are like shoes for him.)

(f)

Ankatmin (this will be explained) is Tahor, and one may not go out with it.

(g)

(Gemara - Shmuel): He may go out with [a Kav,] due to (for it is considered) a shoe, and he may enter the Azarah with it.

(h)

Question (R. Yanai): He may go out with it, due to a shoe, i.e. it is considered a sandal. He may enter the Azarah with it - it is not a shoe?!

(i)

Question (R. Mana): Rather than challenging Shmuel, challenge our Mishnah! His Semuchos are Mekabel Tum'as Medras. He may go out with them on Shabbos, and he may enter the Azarah with them!

(j)

Answer (to both questions - R. Mana): [If you resolve the Reisha with] the Seifa, it is not unlike Shmuel. His chair and its Semuchos are Mekabel Tum'as Medras. He may not go out with them on Shabbos, and he may not enter the Azarah with them. (Surely they are shoes, so he may not enter the Azarah. We must say that he may not go out with them on Shabbos, lest they fall and he carry them. His Semuchos are not considered shoes, for there is no concern lest they fall, for they stick to his knees. We say that a Kav is a shoe to teach that he may go out with it on Shabbos, just like we do not decree against shoes. However, it is not truly a shoe to forbid entering the Azarah with it. We explained this like PNEI MOSHE.)

(k)

Ankatmin is Tahor, and one may not go out with it.

(l)

Question: What is Ankatmin, which is Tahor?

(m)

Answer (R. Avahu): It is [called here] Honum Katmin. It is jester's [mock] donkey.

2)

DARCHEI HA'EMORI AND SIMANIM (Yerushalmi Halachah 9 Daf 38b)
