TOSFOS DH B'TLEISAR

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains the definition of an Ilisa.)

(a)

Explanation: Rabeinu Tam says that Ilisa is the name of a vessel, as stated in Eiruvin (53b), "the vessel (used for taking wine out of a barrel and pouring it into cups) is hitting the bottom of the barrel."

2)

TOSFOS DH RAV

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains that Rav and Shmuel are not arguing.)

(a)

Explanation: They do not argue. Rather, Rav is talking about a case where he is normally late and Shmuel is referring to a case where he is normally early, as stated later.

TOSFOS DH U'MATZA

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains that the tables were set in a different room in their days.)

(a)

Question: In Pesachim (100b), the Gemara says that they agree that one does not bring the table unless he has already made Kidush! (How can we reconcile this with our Gemara that implies the table is already there before Kidush?)

(b)

Answer: It is set in another place, and is only brought to the main eating area after Kidush in order that the meal should arrive in a situation where Shabbos has already been honored, as stated in the Sheiltos of Rav Achai Gaon.

(c)

Observation: This is specifically in their days when they had small tables set before everyone. However, ours our big tables and they are difficult to carry (and therefore we keep them in the main eating area from before Kidush).

4)

TOSFOS DH KOL HA'ONEH

(SUMMARY: Tosfos gives two explanations of "with all of his strength.")

(a)

Explanation #1: This means with all of one's concentration. This is also the explanation given by Rashi.

(b)

Explanation #2: The Ri says that the Pesikta records an incident with Rebbi Yishmael ben Elisha who said that when Bnei Yisrael enter the Shuls and say "Yehei Shmei Raba Mevarach" in a loud voice, they nullify difficult decrees. (This implies "with all of his strength" means literally in a very loud voice.)

5)

TOSFOS DH AMAR REBBI CHANINA

(SUMMARY: Tosfos says one should think "Kel Melech Neman" when saying Amen.)

(a)

Explanation: One should have this thought when saying Amen.
