Translation: One may eat Yo'ezer and drink Avuvaro'ah. What is Avuvaro'ah? It is Chumtriya. What is this? It is a tree that goes straight up, without branches. For what is it done? It is for Giluy. If not, he should take five roses and five cups of beer and cook them until only a Revi'is remains, and drink it. Rav Achdevoy bar Ami's mother prepared this for a man, using one rose and one cup of beer. She cooked it and gave to him to drink; she lit the oven, swept out the coals and put a brick for him to sit on - came out like a green palm leaf. Rav Avya said, one should drink a Revi'is of milk from a white goat. Rav Huna bar Yehudah says, he should hollow out a sweet Esrog and fill it with honey, and put it among glimmering coals, and eat it. R. Chanina says, one stung by a wasp should drink Barzina (a tiny cup) of urine of 40 days. For a scorpion bite he should drink a Revi'is; half a Log is for exposed water, and a full Log helps even against witchcraft. R. Yochanan said, the following help against exposed water and witchcraft - water in which were cooked beets or a certain herb, and sap. If one swallowed a snake, he should eat hops in brine and run three Mil. Rav Simi bar Ashi saw a man who swallowed a snake; Rav Simi disguised himself like a soldier, he made him eat hops in brine and run three Mil in front of Rav Simi - the snake came out piecemeal. Some say that Rav Simi swallowed a snake; Eliyahu appeared to Rav Simi like a soldier, made him eat hops in brine and run three Mil - the snake came out piecemeal. If one was bitten by a snake, he should bring a fetus from a white donkey that was not Treifah, tear it and put it on the wound. In Pumbadisa, a [Yisrael] officer of the king was bitten by a snake. There were 13 white donkeys in the city; all were found to be Treifah. There was another at the other end of the city - before they brought it, a lion ate it. Abaye said, perhaps he was bitten by a 'snake' mid'Rabanan, for which there is no cure - "u'Foretz Gader Yishchenu Nachash". They told Abaye that he was correct - when Rav had died, Rav Yitzchak bar Bizna decreed that no one ring to a wedding myrtle or date branches with bells, and this man did so - therefore, he was bitten by a snake and died from it.
(a)May we use cures brought in the Gemara?
1.Rav Elyashiv: Yam Shel Shlomo (Chulin, 8:12) says that there is an ancient Cherem not to use them, lest one slander Chachamim if the cure does not work. He will not understand that he did not do it properly. Also, nature changed. Also, matters vary based on the place.
(b)What was the answer 'it is for Giluy'?
1.Rashi: It is [to cure] one who drank exposed water (perhaps a snake drank from it and put venom in it).
(c)Why did she sweep out the coals and put a brick for him to sit on?
1.Rashi: She swept out the coals to temper the heat. She put a brick for him to sit on, lest he get burned.
1.Aruch: It is an eighth of a Revi'is.
(e)What came out like a green palm leaf?
1.Rashi: He vomited out the poison.
(f)What is urine of 40 days?
1.Rashi #1: It is 40 day old urine.
2.Rashi #2: It is of a 40 day old baby.
(g)Why did Rav Simi disguise himself like a soldier?
1.Rashi: To frighten him; he also seized and afflicted him.
(h)Why did a lion eat the last donkey? It could have been found to be Tereifah, like the others!
1.Iyun Yakov: Perhaps a snake not of Rabanan bit someone else, and he was cured via eating from the donkey's fetus. Had the lion not eaten what remained from the fetus, also this man could have been cured from it.
(i)What is a snake mid'Rabanan?
1.Rashi: He transgressed something for which Chachamim obligate Niduy.
i.Rav Elyashiv: The snake is like a Shali'ach of Rabanan to claim [payment for belittling] their honor. Abaye sensed this, for it is abnormal for so many donkeys to be Tereifah, and a lion tore the last one.
(j)Ben Dama was bitten by a snake. He did not transgress Chachamim's words (they forbid a cure via a heretic), and he died (Avodah Zarah 27b)!
1.Tosfos: There, no cure was available. Here, a cure was available, and it was lost via bad Mazal.
(k)Did Rav Yitzchak bar Bizna decree that one may never bring myrtle to a Nisu'in?
1.Rashi: No, he decreed for one year.
i.Rav Elyashiv: Abaye was long after Rav. Rava was born on the day that Rav Yehudah, Rav's Talmid, died. He was the same age as Abaye. This man lived many years after transgressing! Hash-m delayed anger, and eventually exacted payment. The Chafetz Chaim once saw a man who rented a home to a widow, and when she could not pay, he removed her roof. This was great cruelty - it was very cold in Radin. In his old age, the Chafetz Chaim said that decades passed, and the man died a bizarre death that shocked all who heard it (NOTE: I heard that he died from rabies. - PF) The Chafetz Chaim knew that his time would come; he waited to see it.
ii.Rav Elyashiv: This was an absolute decree, unlike the decree not to play instruments (NOTE: other than drums - PF) at weddings in Yerushalayim.
