THINGS USED TO BEAUTY GIRLS
Why do people put plaster on a girl's finger?
Rashi: They would plaster the entire body, to redden it.
Rav Elyashiv: It is dangerous to plaster the entire body at once - a Nochri's daughter died from this! Since we plaster one limb at a time, the Shi'ur is the [smallest] amount needed for one limb.
What is the meaning of 'Bnos Yisrael who reached Pirkan, but did not reach [years]'?
Rashi: They brought two hairs [of puberty] before reaching the age proper for this; they are embarrassed about this.
Rav Elyashiv: The hairs are near the Ervah, in a covert place - people do not see them! Even so, she is ashamed lest others see the hairs in the bathhouse. Or, since it is abnormal, it is prone to become publicized.
Tosfos: They are close to the age to marry. They do so to beautify themselves. 'One who wants to whiten his daughter should give milk to her to drink, and feed chicks to her close to Pirkah' (Kesuvos 59b).
The Shi'ur for fine flour should be for plastering, for rich girls do so!
Rav Elyashiv: It is not, for this use is not common.
What is Sateches?
Etz Yosef citing the Aruch: It is Mira Dachya (the Targum of "Mar Deror" (Shemos 30:23), i.e. scented oil).
Etz Yosef citing Mosif ha'Aruch: It is sap from Mor trees, and Mor oil from the press. The Targum of "[Shishah Chadashim] b'Shemen ha'Mor" is ba'Tacheses. This is a printing mistake; it should say b'Sateches.
About what did we ask 'why do they anoint with it?'
Rashi: We asked about Mor oil.
Etz Yosef: In Mo'ed Katan 9b, Rashi explained that it refers to all these that girls anoint with.
Why did Rav Bivi receive 400 Zuz for his daughter?
Rashi: She became very beautiful; many proper men were eager to marry her. (One gave 400 Zuz to be Mekadesh her.)
Rav Elyashiv: Heaven forbid that he would marry her off to someone improper, for money! Therefore, Rashi explained that they were proper for her, and also gave money.
What is the connection between drinking beer and needing plaster?
Rashi: Beer darkens [the skin] and increases hair.
Etz Yosef: In Mo'ed Katan 9b, Rashi explained that it thickens the skin and causes hair to grow.
Why do people plaster Kilkul and Andifi?
Rashi: It makes the hair of Kilkul lie flat, and removes the fine hairs of Andifi.
What was the question 'R. Yehudah's Shi'ur is bigger'?
Rashi: We hold that his Shi'ur is smaller. He is more stringent about Shi'urim of Shabbos!
What is Chachamim's Shi'ur?
Rashi: It is enough to plaster the pinky.
What is Chavot?
Rashi: It is plaster dissolved in much water.
What is Andifa?
Rashi #1: It is a Kli with one opening above and one below.
Rav Elyashiv: 'I agree with R. Nechemyah regarding clumps' implies that he discusses also plaster dissolved in much water. It is not proper to seal an opening! Indeed, we could have asked this; without this, we properly rejected this answer.
Rashi #2: It is plastering the entire body. Since it is to redden (not to make the hair lie flat), much is needed. This Perush explains that 'notches' refers to one limb at a time. The Gemara does not do so! Also, we need to bring 'there were notches in the Hin' to explain this.
Rav Elyashiv: If 'notches' means one limb at a time, R. Nechemyah holds like Rabanan. Above, we said that his Shi'ur is smaller! We must say that he does not require enough for the entire finger; even one joint suffices.
What loss comes via Andifa?
Rashi #1: The wine would dissolve the plaster, and leak out.
Rav Elyashiv: Also notches in a Kli can be dissolved, but it is a small loss to make them again. If wine dissolves the plaster sealing a hole, it leaks out, and this is a great loss.
Rashi #2: He spends much money to plaster his daughter's entire body, and it could kill her, like the Nochri's daughter died!
How did he cause his own death?
Rashi: He should not have expounded about the Merkavah.
Rav Elyashiv: One may expound about it only to one Chacham, and only if he understands [mostly] by himself (Chagigah 11b). This Chacham expounded b'Rabim.
WHAT IS 'A LIGHT EGG'?
What is Tziltzalta?
Rashi: It is a small bird.
What is Tzefirta?
Kovetz Shitos Kamai, citing the Aruch: It is Daitzifi mentioned in Chulin 62a (our text there says Datzifi); it is in the Tor (turtledove) family.
