THE IDEAL WINE FOR THE FOUR CUPS (Yerushalmi Halachah 1 Daf 69a)

(a)

R. Yirmiyah: It is a Mitzvah to use red wine, as the Pasuk states (Mishlei 23, 31), "Do not look at wine turning red''.

(b)

Beraisa: If the wine was cooked enough that it received a flavored taste. May one fulfill his obligation of the four cups with cooked wine?

(c)

Answer (R. Yona): One does fulfill his obligation with cooked wine.

(d)

R. Yona follows his reasoning, as R. Yona would drink the four cups on Pesach night and he had a headache until Shavuos (so they permitted drinking cooked wine, since it is not so damaging to the body).

(e)

R. Yehuda bei R. Elai would drink the four cups on Pesach night and he had a headache until Succos.

(f)

An Amorite noblewoman saw that his face appeared bright and she said to him - Old man, you have one of the following three things - either you drink beer, or you lend money for interest or you breed pigs.

(g)

R. Yehuda bar Elai replied: This woman's spirit should blow up - I do not have any of these three things. Rather, I frequently learn, as the Pasuk states (Koheles 8, 1), "The wisdom of a person will brighten his face''.

(h)

R. Abahu visited Tiveria and the students of R.Yochanan saw that he had a bright face.

1.

Students to R. Yochanan: R. Abahu found a lost article!

2.

Question (R. Yochanan to them): How do you know?

3.

Answer (Students): His face is bright.

4.

R. Yochanan: Perhaps he heard a novel piece of Torah!

5.

R. Yochanan went there and asked R. Abahu - which novel piece of Torah did you hear?

6.

R. Abahu replied: I heard an old Tosefta and understood novel laws from it. They applied to R. Abahu the Pasuk "The wisdom of a person will brighten his face''.
