DAYS FOR KERI'AS HA'MEGILAH (Yerushalmi Halachah 1 Daf 1a)

(a)

(Mishnah): The Megilah is read on the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th or 15th of Adar, but not earlier and not later.

(b)

Cities surrounded by a wall from the days of Yehoshua bin Nun read on the 15th;

(c)

Villages and big cities read on the 14th, but villages [may read] early on the day of assembly (Monday or Thursday).

(d)

(Gemara - R. Ila and Shimon bar Ba citing R. Yochanan): [The Megilah alludes to other days to read it -] it says "Lekayem Es Yemei ha'Purim he'Eleh bi'Zmaneihem."

(e)

Question: What do we learn from "bi'Zmaneihem"? (It should have written bi'Zmanam!) R. Yonah and R. Yosah [argued about this].

(f)

Answer #1 (R. Yonah): It is to give [walled cities and open cities] different times [to read].

(g)

Answer #2 (R. Yosah): [It alludes to] the times that Chachamim fixed [to read] - the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th or 15th. (Had the Megilah not hinted to this, later Chachamim would not change the enactment of Anshei Keneses ha'Gedolah.)

(h)

Question: Perhaps [it alludes to] the 16th and 17th!

(i)

Answer #1 (R. Avahu citing R. Lazar): It says "v'Lo Ya'avor", and [repeats] "Lo Ya'avru" (the repetition teaches that one may not postpone the reading).

(j)

Answer #2 (R. Yitzchak bar Nachman): [It could have written] Lo Ya'avor. [Rather, it wrote] "v'Lo Ya'avor." (We learn from the Vov.)

(k)

Question: Perhaps [it alludes even to] the ninth and 10th!

(l)

Answer (Shmuel bar Nachman citing R. Yonason): It is not written Yamim, rather, "ka'Yamim" - give [additional] days corresponding to the days [that the Megilah explicitly wrote, i.e.] the 11th and 12th corresponding to the 14th and 15th.

(m)

Question: Perhaps [we should add] the 12th and 13th corresponding to the 14th and 15th!

(n)

Answer (R. Chelbo): The 13th was the day of the war. It proves about itself [that ["ka'Yamim Asher Nachu" does not refer to it, for] there was no rest [then].

(o)

Question: If so, we should not read on the 13th! (The Mishnah allows this!)

(p)

Answer: We may read before it and after it. Will you say that on it itself we may not read?! (Surely this is not so.)

(q)

Question: Perhaps [we add only] the ninth and 10th (but not the 11th, 12th and 13th)!

(r)

Answer: "Ka'Yamim" alludes to days adjacent to the days (that are explicit, i.e. 14th and 15th).

(s)

Question: If [we require] days adjacent to the days, this must be the 16th and 17th (since the verse does not come to add the 13th, like we explained)!

(t)

Answer: This cannot be, for [we cannot postpone the reading]. R. Avahu citing R. Elazar learned from "v'Lo Ya'avor... Lo Ya'avru", and R. Yitzchak bar Nachman learned from [that it does not say] Lo Ya'avor, [rather,] "v'Lo Ya'avor."

(u)

(A Chacham citing R. Nasan): The entire month is Kosher to read the Megilah (for one who needs to embark and will not be able to read it in the proper time).

1.

Source: What is the reason? It says "veha'Chodesh Asher Nehefach Lahem mi'Yagon l'Simchah..."

(v)

(R. Chelbo): [The entire month is Kosher] only until the 15th, for R. Avahu citing R. Lazar learned [that we cannot postpone it] from "v'Lo Ya'avor... Lo Ya'avru", and R. Yitzchak bar Nachman learned from Lo Ya'avor - "v'Lo Ya'avor."

(w)

Limitation: [This Heter from the beginning of Adar, or from the 11th,] is only to read the Megilah, but we make Seudas [Purim] only on the 14th or 15th;

1.

And we give [gifts] to the poor only on the 14th or 15th, for the eyes of the poor look forward to the 14th and 15th.

(x)

Question: We should say that these (14th and 15th) are for reading, and these [extra days] are for the Seudah! (Alternatively - we should say that these (extra days) are both for reading and for the Seudah!)

(y)

Version #1 - Answer (R. Chelbo and R. Chuna citing Rav): "Veha'Yamim ha'Elu Nizkarim v'Na'asim" - they are remembered through reading, and done through a Seudah. (Reading must precede the Seudah. According to the latter Perush of the question, above it says "Lihyos Osim Es Shnei Yamim ha'Eleh." This implies that there are only two days for doing (Seudah), and the extra days are only for reading.)

2)

MATTERS GIVEN TO BE EXPOUNDED

(a)

Inference: This shows that we may expound Megilas Esther! (Alternatively - what is the source to expound the Megilah through Gezeirah Shavah or Hekesh?)

(b)

Source (or answer) (R. Chelbo and R. Yosa citing R. Lazar): It says here [in the Megilah] "Divrei Shalom v'Emes", and it says "Emes Kene v'Al Timkor" - [the Megilah] is like the Emes of Torah (a Sefer Torah itself);

1.

Just like [a Sefer Torah] needs Sirtut (to scratch a line before writing, so the writing will be straight), also [Megilah]. Just like we expound [Torah], we expound Megilah.

(c)

(R. Yirmeyah citing R. Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak): The Megilah (scroll detailing the form of the Beis ha'Mikdash) that Shmuel gave to David was given to be expounded.

1.

Source: What is the reason? "Ha'Kol bi'Chsav" - this is the tradition [of extra or missing Vovim and Yudim, or words pronounced unlike they are written]. "Mi'Yad Hash-m" - this is Ru'ach ha'Kodesh. "Alai Hiskil" (to understand one matter amidst another) - this shows that it was given to be expounded.

(d)

Question (R. Yirmeyah): Why don't we learn [Ru'ach ha'Kodesh] from [verse 12 above] "v'Savnis Kol Asher Hayah va'Ru'ach Imo"? (He questions R. Shmuel, who learned this from "mi'Yad Hash-m.")

(e)

Answer (R. Mana): [One could have said that] "Ru'ach" refers to oral transmission.

3)

FROM WHEN MUST THE CITY HAVE A WALL?

(a)

(Mishnah): Cities surrounded by a wall from the days of Yehoshua bin Nun read on the 15th.

(b)

Explanation #1 (R. Simon citing R. Yehoshua ben Levi): [Logically, only Shushan should read on the 15th, for there they fought also on the 14th. Chachamim enacted that all walled cities are like Shushan, and] they showed honor to Eretz Yisrael, which was desolate in those days, and made [the status of a walled city] dependent on [a wall] from the days of Yehoshua bin Nun.

(c)

Question: All walled cities (whether from the days of Yehoshua, or from the days of Achashverosh) should read on the 15th!

(d)

Explanation #2 (R. Avahu): We learn from a Gezeirah Shavah "Yeshivah-Yeshivah" (from "u'Vnei Yisrael Yoshvim b'Arei Yehudah") - just like there it is from the days of Yehoshua bin Nun, also here [in the Megilah] it is from the days of Yehoshua.

(e)

Question: All open cities (whether they had a wall in the days of Yehoshua and they are open now, or vice-versa) should read on the 14th!

(f)

Answer (R. Yudah bar Pazi): We learn from a Gezeirah Shavah "Perazi-Perazos." It says here Perazos, and it says there "me'Arei ha'Perazi Harbeh Me'od" - just like Perazi there is from the days of Yehoshua bin Nun, also Perazi here is from the days of Yehoshua.

(g)

(Beraisa - R. Yehoshua ben Korchah): [A city reads on the 15th if it had a wall] from the days of Achashverosh.

(h)

Objection (R. Yosi bei R. Yehudah, to Rabanan who says that depends on a wall from the days of Yehoshua): What is the relevance of Shushan here? If you learn from Shushan, if so in Shushan ha'Birah they should not read [on the 15th, for there is no source that it had a wall then] and all other places [surrounded from the days of Yehoshua] they should read [on the 15th]!

(i)

Implied question: Must we say that there is a three-way argument? I.e. the first Tana holds that [it depends on a wall] from the days of Yehoshua. The next Tana (R. Yehoshua ben Korchah) holds from the days of Achashverosh. And the last Tana (R. Yosi bei R. Yehudah) holds that any city [with a wall now, it reads on the 15th].

(j)

Answer: [No.] We can say that R. Yehoshua ben Korchah and R. Yosi bei R. Yehudah said the same [Halachah, it depends on from the days of Achashverosh], just they have different reasons. (R. Yehoshua ben Korchah learns from what resembles Shushan. R. Yosi expounds "Ir va'Ir".)
