Since home owners try to make the most out of their utensils, a bowl that cracks is still useful (and therefore is still Mekabel Tum'ah) until the hole becomes so large that pomegranates may fall through. At that point the utensil will no longer be Mekabel Tum'ah.

(a)A Zav (see Background to Shabbos 83:2a), Zavah (see Background to Shabbos 83:2b), Nidah (see Background to Shabbos 82:30a), or Yoledes can cause objects that are under them to become Avos ha'Tum'ah whether they touch them or not. The objects become Tamei Midras (lit. an object that is treaded upon), otherwise known as Mishkav or Moshav (or the Tachton of a Zav, Zavah, etc.). An object under a Zav, etc., becomes a Midras only if it was made for lying, sitting, or leaning upon. Earthenware objects (Klei Cheres) cannot become Midras.

(b)A person who touches (Maga) or carries (Masa) a Midras (or a Zav, etc., themselves), along with the clothes he is wearing or other utensils (except for earthenware utensils) that he is touching at the time, gets the status of Rishon l'Tum'ah.

(a)Certain Halachos, such as the creation of a Reshus ha'Yachid on Shabbos, require the presence of Mechitzos. In the absence of physical Mechitzos, or if there is too broad a breach in a Mechitzah, a Tzuras ha'Pesach may be employed to take the place of a solid wall.

(b)A Tzuras ha'Pesach consists of a primitive doorframe: "One vertical rod on either side, with a horizontal rod lying on top of them" (Eruvin 11b). The area inside of the Tzuras ha'Pesach is considered to be a doorway, rather than a breach, and it therefore takes the place of solid wall.

(c)There are a number of conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the Tzuras ha'Pesach to be valid (see Insights to Eruvin 11b, 16b).
