Why does the Torah see fit to tell us that Timna was the concubine of Esav's son, Elifaz (even though it does not name the mothers of Esav's other grandchildren here?

1.

Rashi and Ramban #1: To teach us the greatness of Avraham Avinu - Because Timna (who was the daughter of one of the chiefs who initially resided 1 in Har Se'ir), 2 decided that it was preferable to become a concubine in the family of Avraham than a wife among her own people, and ended up as the concubine of Elifaz.

Seforno: Elifaz, who was among the conquerors of Har Se'ir, took her (as she was the daughter of one of the chieftains) as a concubine by force.

Ramban #2: Because Elifaz's son, Amalek, was born to him from Timna, who was a concubine, he is not included in the Bnei Esav, 3 nor did he dwell together with them in Har Se'ir. 4 :

How does this tally with the Pasuk in Divrei ha'Yamim (1. 1:36) that lists Timna among the children of Elifaz?

Rashi: In fact, Elifaz committed incest with the wife of Se'ir ha'Chori 1 who bore him Timnah and whom he subsequently took as a concubine. 2

Ramban #1: Elifaz married the wife of Se'ir ha'Chori after he died, and she bore him Timna, whom he subsequently married. 3

Ramban #2: There were two Timna's, one mentioned here, the other, in Divrei ha'Yamim (which is synonymous with the Timna mentioned later in Pasuk 40), both of whom were Mamzerim. 4

Ramban #3, Moshav Zekenim and Rashbam, from Midrash Shochar Tov: Elifaz had a son named Timna, 5 and a concubine named Timna.

Ramban #4: After giving birth to Amalek, Timna, the wife of Amalek, bore a son and died in childbirth. Before she died however, she called him Timna, to perpetuate her name, but Elifaz called him Korach. 6

One can assume that Targum Yonasan, according to whom Elifaz was Iyov's friend, the Navi, will not concur with Rashi's explanation.

Since a ben No'ach is permitted to marry his daughter. The Torah therefore does not mention her among the children of Se'ir, since her father was not from the family of Se'ir (Rashi). Refer also to 36: 22:1:2.

Why was he not listed among Elifaz' sons? Indeed, the word "v'Simna" at the start of our verse is read also with "u'K'naz" (at the end of Pasuk 11), in the list of Elifaz' sons(). Moshav Zekenim - the stroke between "v'Simna" and "Haysah" alludes to this. He and Rashbam cite other examples of double words like this. Ramban - the Torah did not want to write Timna twice, for a male and for a female.

מהר"ל (חידושי אגדות, סנהדרין דף צט: עמ' רכט, ד"ה ולא קבלוה): האבות השפילו עצמם לפני ה', וגר צריך להתחבר לגמרי אל מי שמגייר אותו [ולכן היה על תמנע להשפיל את עצמה כמו האבות], אך היא לא הייתה עושה זאת כי הייתה בת מלכים.

למה נולד עמלק מתמנע?

מהר"ל (חידושי אגדות, סנהדרין דף צט: עמ' רכט, ד"ה ולא קבלוה): האבות הרחיקו את תמנע בכך שהיא באה להתגייר ולא קיבלוה, וכשנדחתה על ידם זהו תכלית הריחוק, ולכן יצא ממנה עמלק.

רש"י: ובדברי הימים מונה אותה בבניו של אליפז: רמב"ן: כיצד מנה שם בין הבנים גם את בתו?

גור אריה: כיון שעמלק היה בנה, צריך למנות את תמנע לפניו.

רש"י: שבא על אשתו של שעיר ויצאה תמנע מביניהם: אולי היו שתי תמנע?

גור אריה: בספר דברי הימים מנה את תמנע עם בני אליפז, ומכיון ששאר בני אליפז אלופים היו, קשה למה לא מנה כאן את תמנע בין האלופים? אלא שהיא הייתה נקבה.

רש"י: שבא על אשתו של שעיר: אולי הוא נשא אותה בהיתר אחרי שמת שעיר?

1.

גור אריה: בפסוק כ תמנע מנויה בין תולדותיו של שעיר, ובהכרח שחשבו שהיא בתו [כי בא אליפז על אשתו].
