BERACHOS 54 (14 Nisan) - dedicated by Mr. D. Kornfeld l'Iluy Nishmas his grandmother, Chayah bas Aryeh Leib Shpira (nee Sole), on the day of her Yahrzeit.

1)

BRACHOS WHERE MIRACLES WERE DONE (Yerushalmi Perek 9 Halachah 1 Daf 1a)

(a)

(Mishnah): If one sees a place where miracles were done for Yisrael, he says "blessed is He Who did miracles for our ancestors in this place."

1.

Note: These Berachos are said with Shem u'Malchus, i.e. Hash-m's name and kingship. Below (64b) we assume that they are comparable to Brachos on fragrances.

(b)

If one sees a place from which idolatry was uprooted, he says "blessed is He Who uprooted idolatry from our land";

(c)

(Gemara): Our Mishnah discusses miracles done for all of Yisrael, but for miracles done for an individual, he need not bless [unless the miracle occurred for him].

(d)

Question: Does one bless for miracles done for his father, miracles for his Rebbi, or if he was a special person, like Yo'av ben Tzeruyah and his colleagues, or a person who was Mekadesh Shem Shamayim, like Chananyah, Misha'el and Azaryah? (The last question is answered below.)

(e)

Question: Miracles done for a Shevet, does one bless?

(f)

Answer: The one who says that every Shevet is called a Kahal (and if the majority of a Shevet transgressed Kares due to a mistaken ruling of the Great Sanhedrin, they bring Par Helam Davar, he holds that), he must bless. The one who says [only] all the Shevatim [together] are called Kahal, he holds that), he need not bless.

(g)

One who sees [the following matters in] Bavel must bless five Brachos. If he saw the Peras (Euphrates) river, he blesses Baruch Oseh Bereishis.

(h)

If he saw [the idol] Markulis, he blesses "Baruch is the One who is slow to anger." If he saw the house of Nebuchadnetzar, he blesses "Baruch is the One who destroyed that Rasha's house."

(i)

If he saw the place of the furnace [into which Chananyah, Misha'el and Azaryah were thrown], or the lions' den [into which Daniel was thrown], he blesses "Baruch is the One who did miracles for our fathers in this place."

(j)

If he saw the place where [an animal cannot leave until] they take from there earth [and put it on the animal - this was a curse of Bavel], he blesses "Baruch is the One who decrees and fulfills."

(k)

If he saw Bavel, he says "v'Tatasiha b'Mat'atei ha'Shemad."

(l)

(R. Ze'ira and R. Yehudah citing Rav): Any Brachah without Shem [Hash-m] and Malchus is not an [absolute] Brachah.

(m)

Source (R. Tanchuma): "Aromimcha Elokai ha'Melech [va'Avarcha Shimcha]."

(n)

(Rav): One must say [in a Brachah] "Atah" (You).

(o)

(Shmuel): One need not say "Atah".

(p)

R. Yochanan and R. Yonason went to make Shalom in southern cities. They went to one place and found the Shali'ach Tzibur say 'ha'Kel ha'Gadol ha'Gibor veha'Nora ha'Avir veha'Amitz', and they silenced him. They told him, you have no permission to add to the text that Chachamim fixed in Brachos.

(q)

(Rav Huna citing Rav): "Shakai Lo Metzanuhu Sagi Ko'ach" - we cannot [fathom or express] the strength and Gevurah of ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu.

(r)

(R. Avahu citing R. Yochanan): "Ha'Yesupar Lo Ki Adaber Im Amar Ish Ki Yevula" - if a person comes to tell [all] the Gevurah of ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu, he will be swallowed from the world.

(s)

(R. Shmuel bar Nachman): "Mi Yemalel Gevuros Hash-m" - someone like me (David) and my colleagues.

(t)

(R. Avun): "Mi Yemalel Gevuros Hash-m?!" (Can anyone do so?!)

(u)

Yakov [the esteemed man] of the village of Nevuraya expounded in Tzur "Lecha Dumiya Sehilah Elokim b'Tziyon" - the choicest [praise] of Hash-m is silence. [A parable for this is] a pearl without a [limit to its] value - anyone who praises it (assigns a value to it) blemishes it.
