One who consumes [raw] rice blesses on it Borei Minei Zar'onim.

If he baked [the rice into bread] and cooked it - even if the pieces are intact, he says Borei Minei Mezonos and need not bless afterwards;

R. Yirmeyah says, [he blesses beforehand] Borei Peri ha'Adamah.

Bar Marina blessed in front of R. Ze'ira and in front of R. Chiya bar Va, sheha'Kol Nihyah bi'Dvaro.

R. Shimon Chasida says, Borei Minei Ma'adanim.

(R. Yosi bei R. Avun): They do not argue. The one who says Borei Minei Mezonos, this is when it became one clump. The one who says Borei Peri ha'Adamah, this is when each piece is discernible by itself (CHAREDIM). The one who says sheha'Kol Nihyah bi'Dvaro, this is when he cooked it [in so much water that it became like a liquid]. The one who says Borei Minei Ma'adanim, this is when he mixed it [with honey and spices - HA'GAON RAV C. KANIEVSKY, SHLITA].

Question: This refers to [the Brachah] beforehand. [What is the Brachah] Acharonah?

Answer (R. Yonah citing R. Shimon Chasida): "...Who created kinds of delicacies to give pleasure to every living soul. Baruch Atah Hash-m Al ha'Aretz v'Al Ma'adaneha."

(Rav Aba bar Yakov citing R. Yitzchak Ruba): Rebbi, when he would eat meat or eggs, he would say 'Asher Bara Nefashos Rabos Lehachayos Bahem Nefesh Kol Chai Baruch Chei ha'Olamim.'

Question: This refers to [the Brachah] after [meat or eggs. What is the Brachah] beforehand?

Answer #1 (R. Chagai): It is Borei Minei Nefashos.

Objection (R. Yosi): A Mishnah disagrees! On vinegar, permitted locusts and Novlos (dates that fell before they ripened), one blesses sheha'Kol. Are not locusts a kind of Nefesh (yet he does not bless Borei Minei Nefashos)?!

R. Shimon Chasida (who said that there is a Brachah Acharonah for rice) holds like Rebbi (who said that there is a Brachah Acharonah for meat and eggs), and both of them hold like R. Gamliel;

(Beraisa): This is the Klal (general rule) that R. Yehudah used to say in the name of R. Gamliel. Anything that is one of the seven species [of Eretz Yisrael], and is not a species of grain, or it is a species of grain, and he did not bake it into bread - R. Gamliel says, he blesses after it three Brachos. Chachamim say, he says one Brachah [me'Ein Shalosh];

Anything that is not one of the seven species, and is not a species of grain, R. Gamliel says, he blesses before it and after it. Chachamim say, he blesses before it but not after it.

(R. Yakov bar Idi citing R. Chanina): Anything that is like flour (cooked in water), or like Chalitah (flour put in boiling water), and it is from the five species [of grain], he blesses on it Borei Minei Mezonos and afterwards one Brachah me'Ein Shalosh.

Question: And anything that is like flour, or like Chalitah, and it is not from the five species - [what is the Brachah? We explained this like CHAREDIM.]

R. Yonah: R. Ze'ira sent me to the academy of R. Yanai, and they told me, but I do not know (remember) what they told me.

Question: What was the conclusion?

Answer (R. Yosi): Presumably, he blesses sheha'Kol Nihyah bi'Dvaro.

Question (R. Yirmeyah): One who eats flour - does he bless afterwards?

R. Yosi: Due to this [Safek], R. Yirmeyah never ate flour [outside a meal].

[R. Yirmeyah] was unsure whether or not [one must say Birkas me'Ein Shalosh afterwards].

Question: (In Birkas me'Ein Shalosh we must mention the land and Yerushalayim.) Why do we close it [only] with the land?

Answer: It is made like Birkas [ha'Mazon] of workers who were working by a Ba'al ha'Bayis. They bless the first Brachah and include of Yerushalayim and the land (Eretz Yisrael, in one Brachah), and close the Brachah [only] with the land;

However, if they were working [only] for their meal (they do not receive wages), of the Ba'al ha'Bayis eats with them, they bless all four Brachos.

Of Beis R. Yanai make [me'Ein Shalosh] like a fixed text (he closed with the land also after wine or Peros of the seven species).

Question: Does one mention me'Ein ha'Me'ora (e.g. Shabbos, festivals or Rosh Chodesh) in [me'Ein Shalosh]?

Answer (R. Aba bar Zimna): R. Ze'ira mentioned me'Ein ha'Me'ora in it.

(R. Yirmeyah): Since R. Ze'ira was concerned [to mention me'Ein ha'Me'ora], we must be concerned.

(Beraisa): We bless on the choicest grain.

A [whole] quality bun (from fine flour), and a Shalem (whole loaf) of a Ba'al ha'Bayis, he blesses on the bun;

A slice of a quality bun, and a Shalem of a Ba'al ha'Bayis, he blesses on the Shalem of a Ba'al ha'Bayis;

Wheat bread and barley bread - he blesses on the wheat;

A slice of wheat bread, and a Shalem barley loaf - he blesses on the slice of wheat bread;

Barley bread and spelt bread - he blesses on the barley.

Question: Spelt is better than it!

Answer: This (barley) is one of the seven species, and this (spelt) is not one of the seven species.

(R. Yakov bar Acha citing R. Ze'ira): This is like R. Yudah, for R. Yudah says, if one of the [foods that he wants to eat] is from the seven species, he blesses on it.

Tamei bread and Tahor bread - R. Chiya bar Va says, he blesses on the Tahor.

Clean Tamei bread (the bran was removed) and coarse Tahor bread - R. Chiya bar Ada citing R. Acha says, he blesses on whichever he wants.

Bark - R. Yakov bar Acha citing Shmuel says, he blesses on it Borei Peri ha'Etz.

(R. Chalafta ben Sha'ul - Beraisa): [He blesses] sheha'Kol Nihyah bi'Dvaro.

(R. Yehoshua - Beraisa): [He blesses] Borei Minei Desha'im.

R. Oshaya's Beraisa argues with him. [It says that] Minei Desha'im are [only] Kornas, Chalimah, Dimu'a and Eted.
