FOOTNOTES:

==========

(1) This was the Lishkah of the Kohen Gadol that was adjacent to the Sha'ar ha'Mayim, and also adjacent to the area in which the family of Avtinas made the Ketores (according to the Gemara's conclusion that the Lishkas Beis Avtinas was in the south.)

(2) This was also called the Lishkas ha'Etz (in the Mishnah in Midos 5:3; see, however, Tosfos Ri ha'Lavan for a variant opinion) and Lishkas Balvati (Yoma 4b). It was the place of residence of the Kohen Gadol during the seven days of his isolation before Yom Kipur. (This is according to the Gemara's conclusion that the Lishkas Parhedrin was in the north.)

(3) Some say that this was the name of the gentile sorcerer who built it, while others say it was the name of the Jewish sorcerer who built it (Rosh, Midos 5:3, explaining Rashi). Others say that a gentile sorcerer, who wanted to see the Avodah of the Kohen Gadol, had dug a tunnel from outside of Har ha'Bayis into the Azarah and emerged at this point where he was captured and killed (TOSFOS Yoma 35a, in the name of the Aruch). It was built in the sanctified part of the Azarah, and a spiral staircase ascended to it from the Lishkas ha'Madichim.

(4) This was built in an area that was not sanctified with Kedushas ha'Azarah.
