TOSFOS DH v'Ne'etaros Neshikos Sonei

(SUMMARY: Tosfos gives different explanations of this.)

(a)

Explanation #1: The wounds from a lover are faithful, and the opposite regarding a Sonei (one who hates). "Ne'etaros" denotes turning over with an Eter. This is a pitchfork used to turn over grain.

1.

The simple meaning of the verse is "wounds from a lover are faithful" - he does so for good. Even when he intentionally hits his friend, he intends for good;

2.

The kisses of a Sonei are the opposite. He does everything for evil.

(b)

Explanation #2: Some explain the simple meaning of the verse is "wounds from a lover are faithful, and Ne'etaros are kisses of a Sonei." Ne'etaros refers to abundance, i.e. his kisses seem like a burden, i.e. they are always numerous and burdensome.

(c)

Explanation #3: Some say that when lovers quarrel and hate each other, the hatred is Ne'emanah (lasting). The verse means that "wounds from a lover are lasting", i.e. the hatred between lovers. It endures;

1.

"V'Ne'etaros Neshikos Sonei" - when enemies make peace with each other, the Shalom and compromise between them is faithful and lasting. "V'Ne'etaros Neshikos Sonei" means that his kisses are Ne'etaros (many, i.e. enduring).

4)

TOSFOS DH Mah Erez Zeh

(SUMMARY: Tosfos asserts that Bil'am did not say "Alei Mayim.")

(a)

Explanation: Even though the verse says "Alei Mayim", Bil'am did not say this, rather, an angel said it;

1.

The same applies to all [his Berachos]. He said "k'Nechalim" (which can dry up), and the angel said Nitayu, which do not dry up. The same applies to Alei Nahar.

TOSFOS DH Nizdamen Lo Echad she'Hu Mechu'ar b'Yoser

(SUMMARY: Tosfos brings that the man was Eliyahu.)

(a)

Reference: In Maseches Derech Eretz it explains that the man was Eliyahu. He intended for the good, so he (R. Elazar) would not regularly do so [become haughty].

6)

TOSFOS DH Lo Tzericha d'Naflei Machmas Govaihu

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains that they fell only due to their height.)

(a)

Explanation: They were strong, and it was not proper that they fall. [They fell] only due to their height.

7)

TOSFOS DH Amar Lei d'Ika Rav Ada Bahadan d'Nafish Zechusei

(SUMMARY: Tosfos says that there were two Rav Ada bar Ahavah's.)

(a)

Assertion: We must say that there were two Rav Ada's. Rav Ada bar Ahavah was in the days of Rava. We find in several places Rav Ada bar Ahavah cites Rava.

1.

It seems that the Rav Ada bar Ahavah here was a colleague of Rav and Shmuel, since Shmuel said to Rav "there is Rav Ada with us";

(b)

Conclusion: We know that Rav Yehudah was a Talmid of Rav and Shmuel, and Rava was born the day Rav Yehudah died, and Rav Ada bar Ahavah was a Talmid of Rava. If so, we must say that there were two Rav Ada's.

8)

TOSFOS DH b'Hachinaso

(SUMMARY: Tosfos distinguishes different kinds of nicknames.)

(a)

Explanation: This is a derogatory nickname that people coin for someone.

(b)

Distinction: Chanichaso is a nickname appended to his family name, like it says "Chanichas Avos in Gitin is until 10 generations" (Gitin 88a);

(c)

Example: An example is R. Avraham ibn Ezra. His entire family was called this way;

(d)

Distinction: It is forbidden only if it is derogatory. If it is praiseworthy, it is permitted.
