(Mishnah) Question: What was the procedure of the Berachos and curses?

Answer: When Bnei Yisrael entered Eretz Yisrael, they came to Har Gerizim and Har Eival in (by) Shomron, next to Shechem, by Eilonei Moreh - it says "ha'Lo Hemah b'Ever ha'Yarden";

And below it says "va'Ya'avor Avram ba'Aretz Ad Mekom Shechem Ad Alon Moreh" - just like Alon Moreh said there is Shechem, also Alon Moreh said here (Berachos and curses) is Shechem.

(Gemara): "Ha'Lo Hemah b'Ever ha'Yarden", and further. "Acharei Derech Mevo ha'Shemesh" - [far] from the place (the east) from which the sun [initially] shines (rises);

"B'Eretz ha'Kena'ani ha'Yoshev ba'Aravah Mul ha'Gilgal Etzel Eilonei Moreh" - this is Har Gerizim and Har Eival that are among the Kusim. (There are in Shomron, and Sancheriv put Kusim there in place of the exiled 10 Shevatim - YEFE MAR'EH.) R. Yehudah says so;

R. Eliezer says, this is not Har Gerizim and Har Eival of the Kusim, for it says "ha'Lo Hemah b'Ever ha'Yarden" - near the Yarden. "Acharei Derech Mevo ha'Shemesh" - [far] from the place (the west) from to which the sun comes (sets);

"B'Eretz ha'Kena'ani", and these (Har Gerizim and Har Eival of the Kusim) are among the Chivi nation. (Kena'ani live by the Yarden, and Chivi is in the mountains.) "Ha'Yoshev ba'Aravah", and these are among the mountains. (R. Yehudah explains that even though they are mountains, the primary Yeshivah there is in the Aravah (plain) between them.) "Mul ha'Gilgal" - these are not opposite Gilgal. "Etzel Eilonei Moreh" - these are not [by] Eilonei Moreh. (We explained this like YEFE MAR'EH and the Hagahah there. I do not know that his source that Chivi is in the mountains. He cites Bamidbar 13:29, which says so about Chiti! - PF)

Question: How does R. Elazar fulfill "Har Gerizim u'Har Eival"? (These are not near the Yarden!)

Answer: They made two mounds (near the Yarden) and called them Har Gerizim and Har Eival.

Consequence: According to R. Yehudah, they went 120 Mil (a Mil is 2000 Amos, about a kilometer) that day (that they crossed the Yarden, miraculously; normally a person walks 40 Mil in a day. SHIREI KORBAN - they gave the Brachos 60 Mil from the Yarden, and returned to Gilgal, near the Yarden, before night.) According to R. Elazar, they did not budge [go far] from their place (they made mounds near the Yarden, and gave the Brachos and curses).

(Beraisa - R. Eliezer ben Yakov): (After Moshe will die, they will not have a cloud to lead them.) The verse comes only to teach the path they should take, to teach that they should go b'"Derech", and not through fields; "ha'Yoshev" (settled areas), and not through wilderness; "ba'Aravah" (plains), and not on mountains.
