12th CYCLE DEDICATION
SOTAH 12 (2 Sivan) - This Daf has been dedicated in memory of Harry Bernard Zuckerman, Baruch Hersh ben Yitzchak (and Miryam Toba), by his children and sons-in-law.

1)

HONOR SHOWN TO YAKOV IN HIS DEATH (Yerushalmi Perek 1 Halachah 10 Daf 8a)

(a)

(Mishnah): Yosef merited to bury his father, and none of his brothers were greater than him - "va'Ya'al Yosef Likvor Es Aviv." Who is greater than Yosef, that Moshe engaged in his burial!

1.

Moshe merited to take Yosef's bones, and no one in Yisrael was greater than him - "va'Yikach Moshe Es Atzmos Yosef Imo." Who is greater than Moshe, that only ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu engaged in his burial - "va'Yikbor Oso va'Gai Mul Beis Pe'or..."!

2.

This was said not only about Moshe - rather, it says about all Tzadikim "v'Halach Lefanecha Tzikecha Kevod Hash-m Ya'asfecha."

(b)

(Gemara - R. Yitzchak): The honor of the Life of the worlds (Hash-m) was with them (when they went to bury Yakov). It says "va'Yavo'u Ad Goren ha'Atad" - is there a granary for thorns?!

1.

(R. Shmuel bar Nachman): We reviewed all of Tanach, and we did not find a place called Atad. Rather, what is Atad? It is the Kena'anim, who were proper to be threshed in a granary.

(c)

Question: In which merit were they saved?

(d)

Answer: It is in the merit of "va'Yar Yoshev ha'Aretz ha'Kena'ani Es ha'Evel b'Goren ha'Atad."

(e)

Question: What Chesed (honor) did they do with [Yakov]?

(f)

Answer #1 (R. Elazar): They untied their belts (a sign of Aveilus - PNEI MOSHE).

(g)

Answer #2 (Reish Lakish): They untied their shoulder straps (an Avel bares his shoulders).

(h)

Answer #3 (Rabanan): They straightened their stature. (Initially, they were sitting.)

(i)

Answer #4 (R. Yudan): They pointed with the finger and said "Evel Kaved Zeh l'Mitzrayim."

(j)

These did not do Chesed with their hands and feet, and see what Hash-m paid them - Yisrael, who do Chesed with their hands and feet, with their great [Mesim] and their minor [Mesim], how much the more so!

(k)

(R. Avahu): All those 70 days between letter and letter (the Mitzriyim had respite between one plague and the next - this is like the opinion that Moshe warned about each plague a week before it came) correspond to 70 days that the Mitzriyim did Chesed with our father Yakov. (This is based on MINCHAH CHADASHAH, with a small change.)

2)

HONOR SHOWN TO AHARON IN HIS DEATH (Yerushalmi Perek 1 Halachah 10 Daf 8a)

(a)

Question: It is written [when David heard that Sha'ul and Yehonason died] "va'Ykonen David Es ha'Kinah ha'Zos... va'Yomer Lelamed li'Vnei Yehudah Kashes" - is it reasonable that he needs to teach Bnei Yehudah [archery now]?! Who was [coming to fight Yisrael]?

(b)

Answer: David said, once Tzadikim die, haters come and contest with Yisrael.

(c)

[The above verse continues] "Hinei Kesuvah Al Sefer ha'Yashar"; two Amora'im argued [about this]. One said that it is Sefer Bereishis, and the other said that it is Chumash ha'Pekudim (Bamidbar);

(d)

Question: The one who said Sefer Bereishis, this is fine. ("Yadcha b'Oref Oyvecha" (49:8) alludes to a bow.) The one who said Chumash ha'Pekudim, what war was there there?

(e)

Answer - Question: "U'Vnei Yisrael Nas'u mi'Be'eros Bnei Ya'akan Moserah Sham Mes Aharon" - did he die in Moserah?! He died in Hor ha'Har! It says "va'Ya'al Aharon ha'Kohen El Hor ha'Har va'Yames Sham."

1.

Answer: Rather, once Aharon died, the Anenei ha'Kavod departed, and the Kena'anim wanted to fight Yisrael. This is what it says "va'Yishma ha'Kena'ani Melech Arad Yoshev ha'Negev Ki Ba Yisrael Derech ha'Asarim."

2.

What is Derech ha'Asarim? He heard that Aharon died, their great Tayar (guide), who led them on the way. Come let us fight them!

3.

Yisrael wanted to return to Mitzrayim, and they went back eight journeys. Shevet Levi ran after them and killed eight families (from Yisrael), and they (Yisrael) killed four from [Levi].

4.

This is what is written "la'Amrami la'Yitzhari la'Chevroni la'Azi'eli." (They were mostly killed out, and later restored.)

i.

When were they restored? It was in the days of David - "Yifrach b'Yamav Tzadik."

5.

They said, what caused us all this blood? It is because we did not do Chesed (properly eulogize) that Tzadik;

i.

They went and made a eulogy for him, and bestowed Chesed to him, and the verse attributes as if he died there and was buried there, for they did Chesed with the Tzadik.
