(Mishnah): If one was Motzi a loaf to Reshus ha'Rabim, he is liable;

If two people were Motzi it, they are exempt;

If one person could not be Motzi it and two people were Motzi it, they are liable;

R. Shimon exempts.

If one was Motzi less than a Shi'ur of food in a Kli, he is exempt even for the Kli, for it is Batel to the food;

If one was Motzi a live person on a bed, he is exempt even for the bed, for it is Batel to the person.

If one was Motzi a Mes in a bed, he is liable;

Similarly, if one was Motzi k'Zayis of a Mes or Nevelah, or ka'Adashah of a Sheretz, he is liable;

R. Shimon exempts.

(Gemara): "B'Asosah'' - an individual who did [an Aveirah] is liable. Two or three who did are exempt.

(R. Yehoshua of the south, in front of R. Yosah, in the name of R. Acha): A weaver's rod [neither one could be Motzi it by himself. If two were Motzi it], Rebbi exempts, and R. Elazar b'Ribi Shimon obligates;

Rebbi: I heard from your father [that they are exempt]!

R. Elazar b'Ribi Shimon: I served my father standing (i.e. learned from him sporadically) more than you served him sitting (on a fixed basis! I know his opinion better than you do. Also he obligated.)

Question: Was Rebbi the Talmid of R. Shimon ben Yochai? Was he not the Talmid of R. Yakov bar Kodshi?!

Answer: Rather, R. Elazar b'Ribi Shimon told him "I served my father standing more than you served your Rebbi sitting'' (I know much more than you).

When R. Elazar b'Ribi Shimon entered the Beis Midrash [he would shame Rebbi in Halachah], Rebbi's face blackened. [Rebbi's] father told him "it is proper [that he is greater than you], for it is a lion the son of a lion, and you are a lion the son of a fox.''

After R. Elazar died, Rebbi sent to his widow to ask to marry her. She said to him, a Kli (myself) used to serve Kodesh, will one use it for Chulin?!

The Bavli (Bava Metzi'a 84b) records that she considered R. Elazar greater because he had accepted afflictions on himself; she did not know who was greater in Chachmah.
