THE HETER TO BATHE A CIRCUMCISED BABY (Yerushalmi Perek 9 Halachah 3 Daf 59b)

(a)

Our text of the Mishnah says "one may bathe a baby.'' In Rav's academy they taught "one may bathe [only] the Milah'' (but not the entire baby).

(b)

(R. Avahu citing R. Yochanan): The Halachah follows the opinion that one may bathe the baby.

(c)

(R. Yosi): You are forced to say that one may bathe the baby, for Shmuel taught a Beraisa "we never refrain from putting oil or hot water on a wound on Shabbos.'' (There is no need to teach that one may bathe the Milah!)

1.

R. Yosah: R. Ze'ira always used to tell me 'teach the Mishnah (19:3) to say 'and not only this - rather, one [even] may sprinkle hot water on a wound on Shabbos.'

2.

Question: If you say that one may bathe [only] the Milah, what is the difference between a baby's wound and an adult's wound?!

(d)

(R. Avahu citing R. Elazar): The Halachah follows R. Elazar ben Azaryah.

(e)

(R. Avun citing R. Avahu): R. Elazar ben Azaryah learns from "va'Yhi va'Yom ha'Shelishi bi'Hyosam Ko'avim''- it does not 'bi'Hyoso Ko'av', rather, "bi'Hyosam Ko'avim'' - when all of their limbs hurt them.
