RAV YEHUDAH FORCED RABAH BAR BAR CHANAH TO COME TO THE BEIS MIDRASH

Translation: Rabah bar bar Chanah visited Pumbadisa; he did not go to the lecture of Rav Yehudah. Rav Yehudah told Ada Daila 'Garbei'; he did so. Rabah found Rav Yehudah teaching 'one may not return a broken bone on Shabbos].' Rabah said, Rav Chana Bagdata'ah cited Shmuel to say that the Halachah is, one may return it! He replied, Rav Chana and Shmuel are ours, yet I did not hear this until you told us. It was proper that I forced you to come!
(a)

Who is Ada Daila?

1.

Rashi: He is an appointee.

i.

Etz Yosef citing the Aruch: He is appointed over the tax.

(b)

What is the meaning of 'Garbei'?

1.

Rashi: Take his garment until he comes.

2.

Rav Elyashiv citing R. Chananel: Drag him [to here].

(c)

Why did Rav Yehudah force Rabah bar bar Chanah to come?

1.

Ha'Boneh: One who has a wide, clever heart always wants to hear from others. Rav Yehudah wanted Rabah to come to his lecture, to see what he will be Mechadesh. "Ya'ir Li Ozen Lishmo'a ka'Limudim" - to hear and learn while I teach others!

2.

Rav Elyashiv: Why was he permitted to force him, especially a visitor? This was his conclusion 'it was proper that I forced you to come!' We force a Rav to teach Torah. R. Shimon threatened to inform on R. Akiva to the kingdom if R. Akiva will not teach to him (Pesachim 112a)

(d)

What is the meaning of 'Rav Chana and Shmuel are ours'?

1.

Rashi: They are from our place (NOTE: i.e. from Bavel. Shmuel was in Neharde'a, and Rav Chana Bagdata'ah was from Bagdad, in Bavel (Rashi Kesuvos 6b). Rabah bar bar Chanah was born in Bavel, but he learned in Eretz Yisrael, and visited Bavel. - PF)
