1)

MAY ONE CARRY BETWEEN THE PASIM? (Yerushalmi Perek 2 Halachah 1 Daf 15b)

(a)

[If the well dried up, and] water came on Shabbos, Shabbos entered b'Isur (the Pasim did not permit anything. If the well had water when Shabbos came, and) the well dried up [on Shabbos], Shabbos entered b'Isur (the Pasim still permit).

(b)

Question (R. Yonah citing R. Nasa): May one carry between the Pasim [and the Diyumdin, i.e. even with their thickness]?

(c)

Answer: If there are four Tefachim between them [and their thickness is four], they are like a forbidden porch [of these dimensions; it is a Karmelis]. If not (there are not four square Tefachim in between), they are like a permitted porch (it is Mekom Petur). One may transfer to here (Reshus ha'Rabim) or here (inside the Pasim, which is Reshus ha'Yachid), as long as he does not transfer [from Reshus ha'Rabim to Reshus ha'Yachid via it, or vice-versa. We explained this like PNEI MEIR.]

(d)

(Beraisa): [The width of two teams of bulls] is about 10 Amos. R. Meir says so. R. Yehudah says, it is about 13 or 14.

(e)

They argue about whether [the width of] a cow is one and a half Amos. (R. Meir holds that it is. Six cattle are nine Amos, and there is an Amah between the two teams. In R. Yehudah's locale, a plowing cow is one and two thirds Amos. He considers teams of four each, so the totally width is 13 and a third, i.e. between 13 and 14.)

2)

THE REQUIRED SPACE WITHIN THE PASIM (Yerushalmi Perek 2 Halachah 2 Daf 15b)

(a)

(Mishnah): The Pasim may be as close to the well as desired, on condition that a cow can enter Rosho v'Rubo and drink.

(b)

(Gemara - R. Yirmeyah citing R. Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak): This is the Shi'ur [for all animals - PNEI MEIR]. If there is this Shi'ur, even if [the entire body of] a camel is outside, it is permitted (it sticks its long neck inside and drinks);

1.

Less than this Shi'ur, even if a kid is totally inside, it is forbidden.

(c)

(Beraisa - R. Shimon ben Elazar): [The Pasim must be distanced from the well to fit] a full camel and the camel-driver.

(d)

Question: Does he argue with our Mishnah?

(e)

Answer: (He does not argue.) A cow stretches its neck [forward to drink, so room is needed also for its head and neck]. A camel bends its neck [so we need not include room for its head. Perhaps also our Mishnah requires room for the one giving the cow to drink; it is obvious, so the Tana did not need to mention it - PNEI MEIR.]

(f)

Question: Why do we need [room for the cow to enter]? May a cow not stand in Reshus ha'Rabim and eat in Reshus ha'Yachid?!

(g)

Answer (R. Yosah): There, when he [holds its head] and feeds it [there is no concern]. Here, it eats by itself (perhaps it will go outside the Pasim, and he will bring the Kli to it).

(h)

According to R. Meir, [if there is too much distance between the Diyumdin, he needs] Diyumdin and Peshutim. According to R. Yehudah, he needs [to lengthen the] Diyumdin, but not [to add] Peshutim.
