Question (R. Ze'ira): If a Chatzer [was breached to Reshus ha'Rabim], how is it permitted?

Answer (Beraisa): Rebbi says, it is permitted through one plank [on the side of the breach]. Chachamim say, it is permitted through two planks.

(R. Yirmeyah citing R. Chiyah): The Halachah follows the one who says through two planks, as long as there is a plank four Tefachim on this side and a plank four Tefachim on this side.

(R. Yosah): R. Yochanan says that the Halachah follows the one who says through two planks.

I (R. Yosah) say [that Rebbi and Chachamim do not argue]; one plank [suffices], as long as it is a plank four Tefachim. If there are [planks] on this side and on this side, it needs only a plank three Tefachim here and [of] three Tefachim here;

(Haido citing R. Yochanan): [It is permitted through] one plank [of four Tefachim, or through two planks] a plank Kolshehu on this side and a plank Kolshehu on this side.

(R. Ze'ira citing Rav Huna citing Rav): If the length and width of a Mavuy are the same, it is not permitted through a Lechi or Korah, rather, through planks (two of Kolshehu, or one of four Tefachim), like a Chatzer.

Version #1: Shmuel heard this from him, and recited it 40 times [to ensure that he remember it].

Version #2: Rabanan of Kisarin did not say so. Rather, Shmuel asked Rav how much the length must exceed the width. Rav answered him "any amount'', and Shmuel recited it 40 times, lest he [forget and] need to ask Rav, and he will not find him.

(Mishnah): A Mavuy to Chatzeros is like a Chatzer to houses.

Question: How many Chatzeros must be in a Mavuy [for it to be permitted through a Lechi or Korah]?

Answer #1 (Rav and Shmuel): There cannot be less than two [and houses open to the Chatzeros].

Answer #2 (R. Yakov bar Acha citing R. Yochanan): Even one Chatzer here and one Chatzer here [even if no houses open to them].

Answer #3 (R. Acha citing R. Chinena citing R. Yochanan): Even a Chatzer here and a house here, or a house here and a store here.

Answer #4 (Rav Nachman bar Yakov citing R. Yochanan): A Mavuy cannot have less than two Chatzeros, and a Chatzer cannot have less than two houses.

If the length and width of a Mavuy are the same, it is not permitted through a Lechi or Korah, rather, through planks, like a Chatzer.

Shmuel asked Rav how much the length must exceed the width. Rav answered him "any amount.''

So residents of Eretz Yisrael make [their Mavo'os] square [so this Halachah is very relevant].

If five Mavo'os open to a [big] Mavuy [which opens to Reshus ha'Rabim], whether Omed Merubah Al ha'Parutz (the sum widths of the openings of the outer Mavo'os is less than the walled part of the inner Mavuy), or Parutz Merubah Al ha'Omed, no Korah is needed [where they open to the big Mavuy, just where the big Mavuy opens to Reshus ha'Rabim].
