DAF DISCUSSIONS - KIDUSHIN 2

Yonah Rubin asked:

Why can't someone divorce a yevamah that he married with a get?

Yonah Rubin, New York, USA

The Kollel replies:

If he married her through Yibum he can divorce her with a Get, and only with a Get. However, if he has not yet been Meyavem with her, she needs Chalitzah, and not a Get. Therefore, if he married her with Kesef or Shtar (Ma'amar), since he has not yet been Mekayem the Mitzvah of Yibum he may not divorce her with a Get alone, rather he needs Chalitzah along with a Get.
