when driving in a car on 5 hour trip must aperson hold the troah scroll in his lap all the time or can he wrap it up than put in a box than put in seat near him or in the back of the van ?
Albert Eida, usa
Dear Albert,
He cannot put it in a seat near him since the halacha is that it must be resting on something which is at least one Tefach higher than the person sitting next to it. He can stack something there and than put the Sefer Torah on that. (See Shach, Yoreh Deah 282:8)
He cannot put it on the floor of the van, but if there is big box, he
can put it in the box and the box will be on the floor.(See Rema, Yoreh Deah
282:7, Beur Halacha 43:6 par. "Umanichan")
