DAF DISCUSSIONS - SUKAH 55

Mordechai Cohen asked:

Rabbi Kornfeld and the Kollel Iyun Hadaf,

On Succah 55b, Rashi D"H Shevim Parim states that the 70 cows for the nations of the world serve as a kapara for them that rain should fall in their lands. Does this mean that the 1 cow on Sh'mini Atzeres is m'chapear on Klal Yisroel that rain should fall (in Eretz Yisroel)? Or is this 1 cow for a different reason?

Sincerely,

Mort Cohen

The Kollel replies:

The Gemara itself states that the cow is for Bnei Yisrael who are the singular nation. The significance does not seem to be for rain, but rather to show that Bnei Yisrael are loved by Hash-m above all other nations. This is especially signified by Chazal's understanding that Hash-m asks us to "stay one more day." If we would have to bring our own significant Korban for rain on this day, it would seem that this would be more of a necessity than "staying one more day." The Maharsha (in his first explanation) adds that the lone cow is a hint to the fact that in Olam ha'Ba, unlike in this world, the significance of all other nations will be demolished. Bnei Yisrael alone will be the ones who will be extant.

Take Care,

Yaakov Montrose

David Cohen added:

WE MENTIONED IN THE SHIUR FROM THE MARGALIYOS HASHASS WHO QUOTED THAT HASH-M HAS SEVENTY NAMES, YISRAEL HAVE 70 NAMES YERUSHALAYIM AND THE TORAH HAVE SEVENTY NAMES- SEE BAAL HATURIM ON SHIVIM ISH IN BEHAALOTECHA - ALL THESE TOGETHER ARE UNITED INTO ONE ENTITY AS TORAH YISRAEL AND KUDESHA BRICH HU ARE ONE.

THESE TOGETHER (4 x 70) CORRESPOND TO THE PAR - GEMATRIA 280.
