PAST CYCLE DEDICATION

BERACHOS 62 - Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler has sponsored the Kollel's study material for this Daf in honor of the memory of his parents, Mordechai ben Yitzchak Z'L and Rus bas Shlomo Z'L.

1)

(a)Where did Rebbi Akiva once follow his Rebbe, Rebbi Eliezer?

(b)The first thing he learned from him was that one may not face east to west when relieving oneself, only north to south. Whereabouts in Eretz Yisrael did this episode take place?

(c)The second thing he learned was that one may not relieve oneself standing, only sitting. Which third thing did he learn from him concerning which hand to use when cleaning oneself?

(d)What did Rebbi Akiva reply when ben Azai accused him of Chutzpah?

(e)ben Azai seems to have accepted Rebbi Akiva's reply, since he did the same to him (Rebbi Akiva) as he did to Rebbi Eliezer. What did ben Azai ...

1. ... learn from Rebbi Akiva?

2. ... reply when Rebbi Yehudah accused him of Chutzpah?

1)

(a)Rebbi Akiva once followed his Rebbe, Rebbi Eliezer - into the bathroom.

(b)The first thing he learned from him was that one may not face east to west when relieving oneself, only north to south, since this episode took place - in Yehdah.

(c)The second thing he learned was that one may not relieve oneself standing, only sitting, and the third thing was - that when cleaning oneself, one should use the right hand, not the left one.

(d)When ben Azai accused Rebbi Akiva of Chutzpah, the latter replied - that this was Torah, and he wanted to learn.

(e)ben Azai seems to have accepted Rebbi Akiva's reply, since he did the same to him (Rebbi Akiva) as he did to Rebbi Eliezer. ben Azai ...

1. ... learned from Rebbi Akiva - the same three things that Rebbi Akiva learned from Rebbi Eliezer, and ...

2. ... when Rebbi Yehudah accused him of Chutzpah - he gave the same reply

2)

(a)In similar fashion, where did Rav Kahana once go to lie down?

(b)Which two things did Rav do before being intimate with his wife?

(c)What did Rav Kahana comment?

(d)How did Rav ...

1. ... react to this?

2. ... Kahana react to Rav's orders?

2)

(a)In similar fashion, Rav Kahana once went to lie down - under Rav's bed.

(b)Before being intimate with his wife - Rav appeased her and laughed (made a joke).

(c)Rav Kahana commented - that Rav gave the impression that this was the first time he was being intimate.

(d)Rav ...

1. ... reacted to this - be pointing out that what he was doing was not Derech Eretz and that he should leave at once.

2. ... to which Rav Kahana replied - that this was Torah and he wanted to learn.

3)

(a)What reason does Rava give to explain why, after relieving oneself, one cleans oneself with one's left hand, and not with the right one, based on the Pasuk in ve'Zos ha'Berachah "mi'Yemino Eish Das lamo"?

(b)According to Rabah bar bar Chanah, it is because one often places it in the mouth (e.g. whilst eating) eats with the right hand. What does Resh Lakish say, based on the Mitzvah of Tefilin?

(c)The last reason, connected with Leining, is that of Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak. What does he say?

(d)A similar Machlokes exists among the Tana'im ion a Beraisa, where Rebbi Eliezer explains that one eats with the right hand and Rebbi Yehoshua, because one writes Torah with it. What does Rebbi Akiva say?

3)

(a)The reason that Rava gives to explain why, after relieving oneself, one cleans oneself with one's left hand, and not with the right one (based on the Pasuk in ve'Zos ha'Berachah "mi'Yemino Eish Das lamo") is - because the Torah was given with Hash-m's Right Hand (Kevayachol).

(b)According to Rabah bar bar Chanah, it is because one often places one's right hand in one's mouth (e.g. whilst eating) eats with the right hand. Resh Lakish says that it is - because one lays one's Tefilin with the right hand.

(c)The last reason is that of Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak, who explains - that it is because one demonstrates the Neginos (the notes of the Leining) with one's right hand.

(d)A similar Machlokes exists among the Tana'im ion a Beraisa, where Rebbi Eliezer explains that one eats with the right hand, Rebbi Yehoshua, because one writes Torah with it and Rebbi Akiva - because one demonstrates the Neginos with one's right hand.

4)

(a)According to Rebbi Tanchum bar Chanila'i, two of the dangers that anyone who is discreet in the bathroom is saved from are snakes and scorpions. What is the third?

(b)From what other unpleasant thing do others say he is he spared?

(c)What used to happen even when two people would enter a certain bathroom in Teverya?

(d)To which two things did Rebbi Ami and Rebbi Asi attribute the fact that nothing happened to them even when they went in alone?

4)

(a)According to Rebbi Tanchum bar Chanila'i, two of the dangers that anyone who is discreet in the bathroom is saved from are snakes and scorpions; the third is - Mazikin (demons).

(b)Others say he is also spared from - demons infiltrating his dreams).

(c)Even when two people used to enter a certain bathroom in Teverya - they would be attacked by demons even during the day.

(d)Rebbi Ami and Rebbi Asi attributed the fact that nothing happened to them even when they went in alone - to the fact that they behaved discreetly in the bathroom, and remained silent when they were there.

5)

(a)From where did Rebbi Ami and Rebbi Asi learn the previous 'Segulah'?

(b)What tradition did they also have as regards suffering? What are the best two antidotes against to alleviate it?

(c)What did Abaye's nanny do to prevent the Mazikin from attacking him in the bathroom?

(d)Why a lamb and not a goat?

5)

(a)Rebbi Ami and Rebbi Asi learn the previous 'Segulah' from tradition.

(b)They also had a tradition - that the best antidote against suffering - is to accept it in good faith and Tefilah.

(c)Abaye's nanny - trained a lamb to accompany him whenever he went to the bathroom, to prevent the Mazikin from attacking him there.

(d)A lamb and not a goat - because those particular demons resemble goats, and the similarity would have prevented them from being intimidated.

6)

(a)Whenever Rava went to the bathroom, Rav Chisda's daughter used to place a nut in a copper jar. Who was Rav Chisda's daughter?

(b)What did she ...

1. ... do with it?

2. ... achieve by doing it?

(c)This is what she used to do before he became Rosh Yeshivah. What did she do after he became Rosh Yeshivah?

(d)Why did he need more protection afterwards?

6)

(a)Whenever Rava went to the bathroom (near the house), Rav Chisda's daughter - Rava's wife, used to place a nut in a copper jar ...

(b)...

1. ... which she would then shake (in the house) ...

2. ... to frighten away snakes (who run away from noises).

(c)This is what she used to do before he became Rosh Yeshivah. After he became Rosh Yeshivah, she would - open a window right next to where he was defecating and place her hand on his head ...

(d).. to protect him against Mazikin, who are 'jealous' of Talmidei-Chachamim and will attack them more than they will other people.

7)

(a)According to Ula, someone who defecates behind a wall does not need to distance himself any further. What if he needs to do so in an open field?

(b)Isi bar Nasan is more stringent. What does he say?

(c)We query Isi from the Mishnah in Taharos which discusses a guard in an olive-press. What are the ramifications of the ruling that permits the guard to defecate immediately behind a wall that is in front of the olive-press?

(d)How do we reconcile Isi's former ruling with the Mishnah?

7)

(a)According to Ula, someone who defecates behind a wall does not need to distance himself any further; in an open field - sufficiently far away that one cannot hear the noise when he passes gas.

(b)Isi bar Nasan is more stringent. He requires - the latter Shi'ur for someone who defecates behind a wall and out of sight in an open field.

(c)We query Isi from the Mishnah in Taharos which discusses a guard in an olive-press, which permits the guard to defecate immediately behind a wall that is in front of the olive-press - in which case the Taharos in the olive-press remain Tahor (since we are not afraid that an Am-ha'Aretz entered the olive-press and touched the Taharos during that period of time).

(d)To reconcile Isi's former ruling with the Mishnah - we explain that the Chachamim were more lenient by Taharos.

8)

(a)Similarly, we query Isi from the same Mishnah, which discusses a guard who leaves the olive-press to defecate. How far away may he be from the olive-press for the oil to remain Tahor?

(b)How do we reconcile Isi's latter ruling with the Mishnah?

(c)How does Rav Ashi explain Isi's ruling ('so that he doesn't see him') to answer the latter Kashya simply?

8)

(a)Similarly, we query Isi from the same Mishnah, which declares the Tahor oil still Tahor - provided he is able to ascertain that n obody entered the olive-press whilst he was defecating.

(b)We reconcile Isi's latter ruling with the Mishnah - by explaining here too, that the Chachamim were lenient with regard to people who eat Taharos.

(c)Rav Ashi explains simply that when Isi said 'out of sight', he meant that people cannot see his uncovered body (and not that one cannot see him at all).

9)

(a)How did Rav Nachman, based on a Beraisa, react when a Safdan (eulogizer) praised a deceased person in that he was a Tzanu'a (discreet) in his behavior?

(b)How does the Tana there define a 'Tzanu'a'?

(c)Why, based on another Beraisa, did the words of that Safdan bother Rav Nachman? What did the Tana there say?

(d)Who, besides the Safdan, is punished for a eulogy that is undeserved?

9)

(a)Based on a Beraisa, when a Safdan (eulogizer) praised a deceased person in that he was a Tzanu'a (discreet) in his behavior, Rav Nachman reacted - by asking him whether he had accompanied him into the bathroom.

(b)The Tana there defines a 'Tzanu'a' as - smone who behaves discreetly in the bathroom.

(c)The words of that Safdan bothered Rav Nachman, because - in another Beraisa, the Tana states - that, when one eulogizes a person for good deeds that he did mot perform, not only is the deceased punished, but so is the eulogizer ...

(d)... and those who second him.

10)

(a)How does another Tana define a Tzanu'a (in connection with someone who defecates)?

(b)We query this from a statement of Rav Yehudah. What does Rav Yehudah Amar Rav say about relieving oneself early in the morning and late at night?

(c)We also query the Beraisa from Rebbi Zeira and from Rava, who used to travel a Mil out of town to relieve himself by day. What did ...

1. ... Rava instruct his servant to do at night?

2. ... Rebbi Zeira instruct his servant to do at night?

(d)How do we therefore amend the words 'in the same location' in the Beraisa?

10)

(a)Another Tana defines a Tzanu'a - as someone who defecates by night in the same location as he defecates by day (i.e. at a distance from the town).

(b)We query this from a statement of Rav Yehudah Amar Rav, who advises - that one gets accustomed to relieving oneself early in the morning and at night, ir der to avoid having to leave the town to defecate.

(c)We also query the Beraisa from Rebbi Zeira and from Rava, who used to travel a Mil out of town to relieve himself by day.

1. ... Rava instructed his servant - to find him a spot in the street where he could do so.

2. ... Rebbi Zeira instructed his servant at night - to xheck that there was nobody in the vicinity of the Beis Chaverim.

(d)We therefore amend the words 'in the same location' in the Beraisa to - 'in the same way' (just as discreetly).

11)

(a)We already cited Rav Yehudah Amar Rav who says that one should relieve oneself early in the morning and at night, in order not to need to travel for (during the day). What does ben Azai in a Beraisa say about that?

(b)Why does he also say that one should open one's bowels ('Meshamesh' [with a clod of earth or with a small twig]) and then sit down, and not vice-versa?

(c)Why can 'Meshamesh' not mean 'clean the seat'?

(d)On what condition does the Tana advise one to say 'Lo li Lo li, Lo Tachim ve'Lo Tachtim, Lo Hani ve;Lo me'Hani, Lo Charshi de'Charsha ve'Lo Charshi de'Charsh'sa'?

11)

(a)We already cited Rav Yehudah Amar Rav who says that one should relieve oneself early in the morning and at night, in order not to need to travel for (during the day). And we support this with a Beraisa - where ben Azai says the same thing.

(b)He also says that one should open one's bowels ('Meshamesh' [with a clod of earth or with a small twig]) and then sit down - because, even witchcraft that is performed in Spain will take effect on a person who reverses the order.

(c)'Meshamesh' cannot mean 'clean the seat' - because if it did, what is the point of cleaning it after one has sat down, when one has already dirtied oneself.

(d)Tthe Tana advise one to say 'Lo li Lo li, Lo Tachim ve'Lo Tachtim, Lo Hani ve;Lo me'Hani, Lo Charshi de'Charsha ve'Lo Charshi de'Charsh'sa' in the event - that one forgot and sat down before opening one's bowels.

62b----------------------------------------62b

12)

(a)ben Azai in a Beraisa says that one should not lie on the ground (because of the cold). Why does he say that one should not sit on a (high) beam?

(b)How does Shmuel describe sleep at dawn-break?

(c)What else does he describe in the same way?

(d)For how much did bar Kapara sell his pieces of advice?

12)

(a)ben Azai in a Beraisa says that one should not lie on the ground because of the cold, and that one should not sit on a (high) beam - in case one falls off.

(b)Shmuel describes sleep at dawn-break - like an implement that sharpens iron ...

(c)... and that is also how he describes relieving oneself then.

(d)bar Kapara sold his pieces of advice - for a Dinar apiece.

13)

(a)Why should one eat whilst one is still hungry?

(b)What similar piece of advice did bar Kapar add to that?

(c)What did he mean when he said 'Pour whilst the pot is hot!'

(d)What does the sound of a horn blowing in Rome signify?

(e)What should the son of a fig-salesman then do if his father is not at home?

13)

(a)One should eat whilst one is still hungry - because, once the hungry dissipates, eating will no longer achieve its purpose.

(b)bar Kapar added to that - the importance of relieving oneself when one feels the urge to do so ...

(c)... which is what he meant when he said - 'Pour whilst the pot is hot!'

(d)The sound of a horn blowing in Rome signifies - that there is someone who wants to purchase figs.

(e)Consequently, if a fig-salesman is not at home - his son should quickly sell his father's figs.

14)

(a)What did Abaye instruct the Rabbanan not to do, when they traversed the alleyways of Mechuza on their way to the fields?

(b)Why was that?

14)

(a)Abaye instructed the Rabbanan - not to look right or left when they traversed the alleyways of Mechuza on their way to the fields ...

(b)... in case there were women relieving themselves in the fields, and it is not correct to see them.

15)

(a)How did Rav Safra respond, when Rebbi Aba came and coughed outside the bathroom (which had no door) where he was relieving himself?

(b)Afterwards, Rebbi Aba, taking Rav Safra to task, based on the Mishnah in Tamid, compared him to the residents of Se'ir. Which Midah of the b'nei Se'ir was he referring to?

(c)Which Mishnah in Tamid was he referring to?

(d)What did he extrapolate from there?

15)

(a)When Rebbi Aba came and coughed outside the bathroom (which had no door) where Rav Safra was relieving himself, the latter responded with - 'Come in'.

(b)Afterwards, Rebbi Aba, taking Rav Safra to task, based on the Mishnah in Tamid, compared him to the residents of Se'ir - who did not behave modestly when relieving themselves.

(c)He was referring to the Mishnah in Tamid - which rules that if the door of the bathroom in the labyrinths of the Beis-ha'Mikdash was locked, one knew not to enter ...

(d)... from which he extrapolated that entering the bathroom that is occupied constitutes a lack of Tzeni'us.

16)

(a)Based on a Beraisa, what did Rav Safra think, when he told Rebbi Aba to come in?

(b)Raban Shimon ben Gamliel there states that not urinating when necessary leads to Hidrokon, and not defecating ... to Yerakon. What is ...

1. ... 'Hidrakon'?

2. ... 'Yerakon'?

(c)How did Rebbi Elazar react when a Persian once knocked at the door of the bathroom that he was using?

(d)What happened to the Persian?

(e)Rebbi Elazar applied to himself the Pasuk in Yeshayah "va'Etein Adam Tachtecha"? How did he interpret the Pasuk?

16)

(a)When Rav Safra told Rebbi Aba to come in, he thought - that if Rebbi Aba would not be able to relieve himself immediately, hw would be putting himself in lifre-danger

(b)Raban Shimon ben Gamliel there states that not urinating when necessary leads to Hidrokon, and not defecating ... to Yerakon ...

1. ... 'Hidrakon' is - a bowel ailment that causes one's stomach to swell.

2. ... 'Yerakon' is - jaundice.

(c)When a Persian once knocked at the door of the bathroom that Rebbi Elazar was usin, the latter reacted by - by leaving the bathroom immediately.

(d)The Persian was bitten, there and then, by a snake.

(e)Rebbi Elazar applied to himself the Pasuk in Yeshayah "va'Etein Adam Tachtecha" - by reading the word "Adam" as "Edom" (and the Persians of that time were part of Galus Edom).

17)

(a)About whom does the Pasuk in Shmuel write "ve'Amar Lehorg'cha va'Techas alecha"?

(b)What are the two problems with the Pasuk? What ought the Navi to have written?

(c)To whom does 've'Amar' then refer? Why was Shaul ha'Melech Chayav Misah?

(d)And to whom does "va'Techas" refer? What merit did Shaul have that saved him from being killed?

17)

(a)The Pasuk in Shmuel writes "ve'Amar Lehorg'cha va'Techas alecha" - about King Sha'ul.

(b)The two problems with the Pasuk are - lie in the words"ve'Amar" and "vatechas", when the Navi ought to have written "ve'Amarti" and "e'Chasti", respectively.

(c)'ve'Amar' refers - the Torah, meaning that the Torah actually sentenced him to death because he was a Rodef (he pursued David to kill him) ...

(d)... whereas "va'Techas" refers - to his incredible Tzeniyus, which saved him from being killed.

18)

(a)How does the Beraisa now explain the Pasuk there "Vayavo el Gidros ha'Tzon ... ve'Sham Me'arah"?

(b)And how does Rebbi Elazar explain the phrase (in the same Pasuk) "le'Hasech es Raglav"?

(c)What does Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Chanina say about someone who treats clothes with disrespect?

(d)How does this explain the fact that, in David's later years, his clothes did not keep him warm?

18)

(a)The Beraisa now explains the Pasuk there "Vayavo el Gidros ha'Tzon ... ve'Sham Me'arah" - to mean that he entered a wall within a wall ('Geder Lifenim min ha'Geder'), and then went into a cave (to defecate).

(b)And Rebbi Elazar explains the phrase (in the same Pasuk) "le'Hashech es Raglav" - to mean that he covered himself like a Succah.

(c)Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Chanina says - that someone who treats clothes with disrespect - will, as a result, not be warmed by them.

(d)This explain why, in David's later years, his clothes did not keep him warm - because he cut of a corner of Shaul's cloak in the cave.

19)

(a)What was wrong with David's statement to Shaul "If Hash-m incited you against me, may He accept my prayers and remove your anger"?

(b)How did Hash-m respond to that?

(c)What did David subsequently do wrong?

(d)The Pasuk in Shmuel relates how the ensuing plague of pestilence began in the morning, and ended at "Eis Mo'ed", which according to the elder Shmuel in the name of his father-in-law Rebb Chanina, means from the time that they Shechted the Korban Tamid until they sprinkled its blood. How does Rebbi Yochanan interpret "ad Eis Mo'ed"?

19)

(a)David's statement to Shaul "If Hash-m incited you against me, may He accept my prayers and remove your anger" was wrong - in that he accused Hash-m of incitement ...

(b)Hash-m responded - that He would 'incite' David to do something that every child knows is forbidden ...

(c)Subsequently, David - ordered a head-count of Yisrael without taking from them a half-Shekel (or something else via which to count them).

(d)The Pasuk in Shmuel relates how the ensuing plague of pestilence began in the morning, and ended at "Eis Mo'ed", which according to the elder Shmuel in the name of his father-in-law Rebb Chanina, means from the time that they Shechted the Korban Tamid until they sprinkled its blood, and according to Rebbi Yochanan - until midday.

20)

(a)According to Rav citing Rebbi Elazar, why did Hash-m instruct the Angel of Death to take their greatest sage. Whom did the Angel of death choose?

(b)To whom was Avishai ben Tzeruyah compared?

20)

(a)According to Rav citing Rebbi Elazar, Hash-m instructed the Angel of Death to take their greatest sage. The Angel of death chose - Avishai ben Tzeruyah ...

(b)... who was compared to - the majority of the Sanhedrin (i.e. thirty-six sages).

21)

(a)Initially, four Amora'im argue over what the Pasuk is referring to when it writes that "Hash-m retracted (from the decree) because He saw ... ". According to Rav, based on the Pasuk "Vayomer Ya'akov ka'asher Ra'am"(Vayeitzei), He saw Ya'akov. Whom did He see, according to Shmuel, based on the Pasuk "Hash-m Yir'eh Lo ha'Seh" (Vayeira)?

(b)If according to Rebbi Yitzchak Nafcha, based on the Pasuk "ve'Lakachta es Kesef ha'Kipurim" (Ki Sissa), Hash-m saw the money that Yisrael donated towards the construction of the Mishkan, what did He see according to Rebbi Yochanan, based on the Pasuk "be'Har Hash-m Yera'eh" (Vayeira)?

(c)Rebbi Ya'akov bar Idi and Rebbi Shmuel bar Nachmeni argue over the last two reasons presented by the earlier Amora'im. Which is the preferred reason?

According to Shmuel, based on the Pasuk "Hash-m Yir'eh Lo ha'Seh" (Vayeira), He saw - Yitzchak.

(b)If according to Rebbi Yitzchak Nafcha, based on the Pasuk "ve'Lakachta es Kesef ha'Kipurim" (Ki Sissa), Hash-m saw the money that Yisrael donated towards the construction of the Mishkan, whereas according to Rebbi Yochanan, based on the Pasuk "be'Har Hash-m Yera'eh" (Vayeira), He saw - the Beis-ha'Mikdash.

(c)Rebbi Ya'akov bar Idi and Rebbi Shmuel bar Nachmeni argue over the last two reasons presented by the earlier Amora'im. The preferred reason is - that He stopped the plague because He saw - the Beis-ha'Mikdash.

22)

(a)Rava interprets 'Kapendarya' (a shortcut) in our Mishnah literally. What does the word mean (See Hagahos Mahari Landa)?

(b)According to Rav Chana bar Ada in the name of Rav Sama b'rei de'Rav Mari interprets is as an acronym. What is it the acronym of?

(c)On what condition does ...

1. ... Rav Nachman Amar Rabah bar Avuhah permit making a Shul a shortcut?

2. ... Rebbi Avahu permit it anyway?

(d)Rav Chelbo Amar Rav Huna is the most lenient of all. What does he say?

22)

(a)Rava interprets 'Kapendarya' (a shortcut) in our Mishnah literally. The word is Latin for - a short path.

(b)According to Rav Chana bar Ada in the name of Rav Sama b'rei de'Rav Mari interprets is as an acronym - 'a'de'Makifna Adri, Ei'ul be'Ha' (rather than going round the rows of houses, I will go through here').

(c)...

1. ... Rav Nachman Amar Rabah bar Avuhah permits making a Shul a shortcut - provide this was not his intention when he entered it.

2. ... Rebbi Avahu permits it anyway - if it was a public path before they built the Shul there.

(d)Rav Chelbo Amar Rav Huna is the most lenient of all. He maintains - that if one went in to Daven, one is permitted to leave via the second exit (according to the Rif and the Rosh, it is even a Mitzvah to do so).

23)

(a)What does Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi say about someone who spits in the Har ha'Bayis area nowadays?

(b)On what grounds does Rava permit spitting in Shul nowadays? What does he compare it to?

(c)How does Rav Papa, Ravina or Rav Ada bar Masna query Rava? What else might we compare it too le'Chumra?

(d)How does Rava attempt to refute their Kashya?

23)

(a)Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi says that if someone spits in the Har ha'Bayis area nowadays - it is as if he spat into the pupil of his own eye.

(b)Rava permits spitting in Shul nowadays - because it is not worse than wearing shoes, which we know is permitted.

(c)Rav Papa, Ravina or Rav Ada bar Masna queries Rava - as to why we do not rather learn from Kapendarya, which we know is forbidden.

(d)Rava attempts to refute their Kashya by pointing out that - the Tana specifically compares spitting to wearing shoes (and not to Kapendarya).

24)

(a)In the Beraisa cited by Rava, the Tana forbids a person to enter the Har ha'Bayis holding his staff, wearing his shoes, with his money wrapped in a cloth or with his money-belt slung behind him. What does he say about ...

1. ... making it a shortcut?

2. ... spitting there?

(b)From where does the Tana Kama learn the prohibition of wearing shoes in a holy place?

(c)Why is spitting worse?

(d)From which Pasuk in Megilas Esther does Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Yehudah learn the Kal va'Chomer?

24)

(a)In the Beraisa cited by Rava, the Tana forbids a person to enter the Har ha'Bayis holding his staff, wearing his shoes, with his money wrapped in a cloth or with his money-belt slung behind him. He also forbids ...

1. ... making it a shortcut and ...

2. ... spitting there - with a Kal va'Chomer (from taking a shortcut).

(b)The Tana Kama learns the prohibition of wearing shoes in a holy place - from the Pasuk in Sh'mos (in connection with the burning bush) where Hash-m told Moshe "Shal Ne'alecha me'al Raglecha!"

(c)Spitting is worse - because it is Derech Bizayon (disgusting).

(d)Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Yehudah learns the Kal va'Chomer from the Pasuk in Esther (in connection with Mordechai) - "ki Ein la'Vo el Sha'ar ha'Melech bi'Levush Sac".

25)

(a)How does Rav Ada bar Masna explain his Kashya on Rava?

(b)How does Rava therefore re-learn his source for spitting in Shul (from one's home)?

25)

(a)Rav Ada bar Masna explains that what he really meant to ask on Rava was - that we should learn spitting on the Har ha'Bayis from shoes le'Chumra, and in Shul (where it is Derech Bizayon) from Kapendarya (le'Chumra).

(b)Rava therefore re-learns his source for spitting in Shul from one's home - where one is fussy not to allow it to be used as a shortcut, but where one doesn't mind if one spits or wears shoes.
