Beraisa: Achayrim quote from R. Elazar that one may eat it and its mother.

What does that mean? If the mother had been designated for slaughtering, it is permitted (so you may eat the egg on account of its mother); if not, it is prohibited.

Question: Aren't all hens designated for slaughtering, (so the law is obvious - and if the Beraisa is merely ruling like Beis Shamai, why mention the mother - it is obvious)?!

Answer: The Beraisa is teaching that the egg is permitted because of its mother.

A calf that was born on Yom Tov is permitted as it permits itself to be slaughtered by being born - so too for Muktzah, its being laid should permit it.

Question - R. Zeira: If so, a wild animal (about which the Mishnah teaches later on that they are Muktzah and may not be slaughtered) should be permitted as it permits itself upon slaughtering? A doe should be permitted as it permits itself upon slaughtering?

R. Zeira revises: A calf was finished before Yom Tov. This is not the case for an egg - it was finished today (on Yom Tov) and laid today (so it is Muktzah).

Question - R. Ba: This follows the opinion that holds that an animal can give birth in the middle of a gestational month; but according to the opinion that holds that it can only give birth after a gestational month is complete (i.e. when it has been 9 complete months), if it was born today, it was finished today?!

Furthermore - think about it; does he know exactly when the mother mated with the male?!
