(Mishnah): A general rule was said about Peah - whatever is used for food, guarded (not ownerless), grows from the ground (not toadstools and mushrooms), is harvested together (unlike, for example, figs, that are picked one by one) and is stored away (this includes grains and pulses) is obligated in Peah.

The sumac (a type of cashew tree with red fruit), the carob, the walnut, the almond, the vine, the pomegranate, the olive and the date trees are obligated in Peah.

The pasuk states (Vayikra 19:9), "When you reap"; how do we know that Peah also applies to foods that are picked? The pasuk says, "to reap" - the extra word teaches even picking. How do we know it applies to uprooting? The pasuk says "your harvest". This only teaches grains, but what about pulses? The pasuk says, "in your land". How do we know it applies to trees? The pasuk says, "your field".

Baraisa: One may plant grain seeds, pulse seeds and fruit seeds together (and there is no prohibition of Kilayim - mixed planting). If one plants grape seeds with grain seeds, he incurs the punishment of 40 lashes.

(R. Zeira): The pasuk states (Devarim 22:9), "Do not plant in your vineyard (together with) a mixture of seeds". Not only may one not plant other seeds next to a pre-existing vineyard, but one also may not plant a vineyard with other seeds at the same time.

Question (R. Yudan of Kapudkiya to R. Yosi): In Bavel they said that fruit seeds are called seeds; but here you said that they are not called seeds...?

Answer (R. Yosi): There, the Torah excluded them as people do not refer to them as seeds; but here the Torah included it using the phrase (Vayikra 11:37), "...upon any edible seed that has been planted".
