A TZADIK DECREES AND HASH-M FULFILLS (Yerushalmi Halachah 10 Daf 16b)

(a)

(Mishnah): Shimon ben Shetach sent to [Choni] and told him, you deserve to be excommunicated, but what can I do? You act improperly in front of Hash-m, like a [young] child acts up in front of his father, and [the father] does his will! About you it says "Yismach Avicha v'Imecha v'Sagel Yoladtecha.''

(b)

(Gemara): [You are should be excommunicated] because if there was a decree [that there will be no rain], like was decreed in the days of Eliyahu, do you not bring the Rabim to Chilul Hash-m? Anyone who brings the Rabim to Chilul Hash-m must be excommunicated.

1.

Citation (Mishnah - Rosh Hashanah 1:5): (One Shabbos, R. Akiva saw more than 40 pairs of witnesses going to Yerushalayim to testify about the new moon. He stopped them, for there was no need for them to be Mechalel Shabbos.) R. Gamliel sent to him "if you stop the Rabim, is it not found that you stop the Rabim from doing a Mitzvah [next time they will not come to testify, when they are needed], and anyone who stops the Rabim from doing a Mitzvah must be excommunicated!''

(c)

[Choni, to R. Gamliel]: Is Hash-m not Mevatel His decree due to the decree of a Tzadik?!

1.

[R. Gamliel, to Choni]: Yes - Hash-m is Mevatel His decree due to the decree of a Tzadik, but Hash-m is not Mevatel the decree of a Tzadik due to the decree of another Tzadik. (Perhaps a Tzadik like Eliyahu decreed that there not be rain!)

(d)

(Mishnah): What can I do? You act improperly in front of Hash-m, like a child acts up in front of his father, and [the father] does his will!

(e)

(R. Berachiyah citing R. Aba bar Kahana citing R. Ze'irah citing Rav Yehudah, and some say citing Rav Chisda, and some say citing Rav Masnah): "V'Sigzar Omer v'Yakam Lach'' - why does it say Lach? Rather, even if He says so, and you say so (unlike Him), your [decree] will be fulfilled, and Mine will not be fulfilled.

(f)

(R. Chiyah bar Ba): "V'Al Derachecha Nagah Ohr'' (the end of the above verse) is rainfall.

1.

"Af Bri Yatri'ach Av Yafitz Anan Oro'', "Ki Hishpilu va'Tomer Gaveh'' - I said to lower (humble) them (through withholding rain), and you said [to bring rain,] to raise them - yours is fulfilled, and Mine is not fulfilled.

2.

"V'Shach Einayim Yoshi'a'' (the end of the above verse) - I said to lower their eyes with evil, and you said to save them - yours is fulfilled, and Mine is not fulfilled.

3.

I said "Yimalet Iy Naki'' (one will be saved only if he is clean of sin), and you said one will be saved even if he is not clean - yours is fulfilled, and Mine is not fulfilled.

(g)

What is "v'Nimlat b'Vor Kapecha'' (the end of the above verse)? [He is saved] in the clarity (not sullied by sin) of your hands, in the merit of Mitzvos and good deeds in your hands from your beginning.

(h)

Question: It says about you "Yismach Avicha v'Imecha v'Sagel Yoladtecha'' - what is Yoladtecha? (It already said his father and mother!)

(i)

Answer #1 (R. Mana): It is your nation.

(j)

Answer #2 (R. Yosi bei R. Bun): It is your time [of birth].

(k)

Answer #3 (Rabanan): Just like [an evil son] disgraces [his mother] doubly, so [a Tzadik] makes her rejoice doubly.

1.

What is the source that [an evil son] disgraces her doubly? "Ka'as l'Aviv Ben Kesil u'Memer (bitterness) l'Yoladto''; "Ben Chacham Yesamach Av u'Ven Kesil Tugas Imo.''

2.

Question: What is "Tugas Imo.''

3.

Answer (R. Ludah): It is expounded through At Bash (each letter is switched with the letter at the opposite side of the Aleph-Beis - Aleph and Tov, Beis and Shin... Tugas corresponds to) Afra (ashes) in your mother's eye.

(l)

What is the source that [a Tzadik] makes her rejoice doubly? "Yismach Avicha v'Imecha v'Sagel Yoladtecha.''
