THE CRITERIA OF VALID SCHACH (Yerushalmi Halachah 5 Daf 5b)

(a)

(Mishnah): If a person stretched up a vine branch or a pumpkin or creeper branch and used it as Schach on a Sukah, it is invalid.

(b)

If there is more valid Schach than invalid Schach or if he cut them, it is valid

(c)

The general rule: Something that can contract Tumah or does not grow from the ground, cannot be used as Schach; something that cannot contract Tumah and grows from the ground can be used as Schach.

(d)

(Gemara - R. Ba quoting Rav): When the Mishnah said that if he cut the vine etc., it is valid, this is only true when he originally stretched up the vine for the purpose of using it as Schach.

(e)

R. Yaakov bar Acha quoting R. Zeira: He must (also) move the Schach (up and down).

(f)

R. Yosa: He can do just one of these two things - either stretch it up in order to use it as Schach or move it up and down.

(g)

R. Ba Chinana bar Shalmei/ R. Yirmiyah quoting Rav: If he used rungs of a ladder as Schach, it is invalid.

(h)

"Male" rungs are valid. (They cannot contract Tumah as they have no receptacle. The rungs are simply forced into holes in the sides of the ladder). "Female" rungs are invalid. (They contract Tumah as they have receptacles into which the protrusions coming out of the sides of the ladder are inserted).

(i)

If he used combed flax as Schach, it is invalid; if he used unprocessed flax (before soaking and crushing), it is valid.

(j)

If he used ropes as Schach, some teach that it is valid and some teach that it is invalid.

(k)

The opinion that holds that it is valid is referring to ropes of palm fibers (as ropes do not contract Tumah); the opinion that holds that it is invalid is referring to ropes of flax. (Since their form has been changed and they no longer look like they grow in the ground, they are invalid Schach.)

(l)

R. Yochanan: The Pasuk states (Devarim 16, 13), "when you gather from your threshing floor and from your wine cellar" - you should make your Schach from the refuse of the threshing floor and wine cellar.

(m)

R. Shimon B"L: The Pasuk states (Beraishis 2, 6), "a mist rose up from the ground".

(n)

Explanation #1 (R. Tanchuma): Each one follows his opinion -

1.

R. Yochanan says that clouds come from above (and do not come from the ground - therefore, the laws of Schach cannot be learned from the Clouds of Glory); rather, he learns from "when you gather..."

2.

R"SBL says that clouds come from below, so the laws of Schach can be learned from the clouds.

(o)

Explanation #2 (R. Avin): Each one follows his opinion -

1.

R. Yochanan compares the rains to a person who sends his friend wine in its container (so Hash-m sends down rain in the clouds from the heavens).

2.

R"SBL compares it to a person who says to his friend - Send me your box and take back my wheat for yourself (in the box). (The earth sends up the clouds and Hash-m fills them with rain.)
