(c)How, then, was the matter publicized? In the early evening following the 30th of the month, at least ten men would assemble in an upper story. They would partake of a simple meal of bread and beans, but would make a commotion and remain there the entire night. Passerby who saw and heard the proceedings would spread the word that the previous month had been a full thirty days, making that night and day Rosh Chodesh, as the Gemara will explain (Amud Beis).
