R. Levi: If a person eats Matzah on Erev Pesach, it is as if he had relations with his betrothed wife (fianc?e) in his father-in-law's house (as he could not wait the short amount of time until their marriage when she would have become permitted), and one who does so receives lashes.

Beraisa (R. Yehuda ben Beseira): Both Chametz and Matzah are prohibited to eat throughout the entire daytime of Erev Pesach. (R''YBB holds that it is valid to slaughter the Korban Pesach in the morning of the 14th, in which case, the prohibition of having Chametz at the time of slaughtering applies equally in the morning.)

R. Simon quoting R''YBL: Rebbi did not eat Chametz or Matzah. He did not eat Matzah because of the statement of R. Levi (above); he did not eat Chametz because of the statement of R. Yehuda ben Beseira (above).

Question: Was Rebbi a student of R. Yehuda ben Beseira? Wasn't he a student of R. Yaakov ben Kodshai?!

Answer: Rather, he did this because he was a firstborn (and he was therefore obliged to fast on Erev Pesach).

Question (R. Mana): My father, R. Yona, was a firstborn and he ate!

Rav Tanchuma: This was not the reason! Rather, Rebbi was sensitive person and whenever he ate in the daytime, he could not eat at night. Therefore, he refrained from eating during the daytime of the 14th in order to eat the Matzah with an appetite.

Rav Levi: (The reason for reclining is that) it is the way of slaves to eat standing up; so one must eat whilst reclining in order to show that Bnei Yisrael went from slavery to freedom.

R. Simon quoting R''YBL: The Kzayis that a person eats on (the night of) Pesach must be eaten reclining.

Query (R. Yosi asked R. Simon): Must a slave recline in front of his master and a wife in front of her husband?

Answer: I did not hear this from R''YBL.

R. Chiya bar Ada: Even though it is not pleasant for a person to take charity in order to eat, here he must do so in order to publicize the miracle of the Exodus.

Beraisa: A person must rejoice with his wife and children on the festival.

Question: How does he achieve this?

Answer: With wine.

R. Yehuda: Women rejoice with that which is suitable to them and children with that which is suitable to them -

Women rejoice with new shoes and small pieces of clothing (jewellery).

Children rejoice with hazelnuts and walnuts.

They say that R. Tarfon would do this - he would distribute nuts and roasted grains to the children so that they would not fall asleep (at the Seder night).
