1)

Why does it say "Charash Etzim"?

1.

Rashi: If he comes to make it from wood, and cuts wood for it, this is the way.

2.

Malbim: This is a carpenter. (It describes how he makes a wooden idol.)

2)

What is the meaning of "Natah Kav"?

1.

Rashi: This is like builders do. (They stretch a line and a plumb-line to ensure that they build straight.)

2.

Radak: He fixed the measure. Malbim - the line gauges how much wood he will cut for the idol. The man makes it; the idol does not make itself.

3)

What is the meaning of "Yesa'arehu va'Sered"?

1.

Rashi: He straightens and beautifies it with a saw.

2.

Radak: He limits it. I.e. he sets a limit on the wood with a colored thread. The carpenter marks what he wants to cut. The same applies to "v'Sa'ar ha'Gevul" (Yehoshua 15:9). The dye is called Sered; "Kav" is the dyed thread.

4)

What is the meaning of "Ya'asehu ba'Maktzu'os"?

1.

Rashi: He smooths it with planing tools 1 . Targum Yonasan of Maktzu'os is Izmalya (a chisel). Radak - Maktzu'os is one Kli made from two Kelim like chisels.

2.

Malbim: Do not say that it gets divine power after it is cut from the stump. Also after, "Ya'asehu ba'Maktzu'os"!

1

Radak: They peel the wood. The Targum of "ha'Bayis Yaktzi'a" (Vayikra 14:41) is Yekalef.

5)

What is the meaning of "uva'Mechugah Yesa'arehu"?

1.

Rashi: Yesa'arehu is like "v'Sa'ar ha'Gevul" (Yehoshua 15:9). If he comes to make round designs in it, he does so with a compass.

2.

Malbim: Do not say that it gets divine power after it is cut into its form. Also after, "uva'Mechugah Yesa'arehu" to beautify it!

6)

What is the significance of "k'Savnis Ish"?

1.

Malbim: Whether the idol is of iron or wood, you cannot say that it is divine. It has a physical form! "Ish" includes everything found, unlike "Adam".

7)

What is "k'Tif'eres Adam [Lasheves Bayis]"?

1.

Rashi: Like the form of a man. Radak - man's form is nicer than that of other living beings.

2.

Targum Yonasan: Like the praise of a woman to sit in the house. Radak - i.e. just like the glory of a woman is to sit in the house and not go outside, so the idol sits in the house. "Adam" can refer to women, like it says "v'Nefesh Adam Min ha'Nashim" (Bamidbar 31:35).

3.

Radak citing his father: K'Tif'eres Adam is a repetition of "k'Savnis Ish." It is only Lasheves Bayis; it does not leave its place.
