THE PROCESSES THAT PROHIBIT SHAATNEZ (Yerushalmi Kilayim Perek 9 Halachah 5 Daf 43b)

(a)

(Mishnah): The prohibition of Kilayim only applies to a fabric that was spun and woven, as the pasuk states (Devarim 22:11), "Do not wear Shaatnez" (which is a compound word standing for) 'Shua' (combed), Tavui (spun) and Nuz (twisted or some say woven).

(R. Shimon ben Elazar): 'Nuz' - teaches that 'Naloz U'Meiliz' - this person is deviant and he deviates his Father in Heaven away (from him).

(c)

Felt is prohibited since the fibers have been combed. One may not attach an edging of wool to a linen garment as they appear to have been woven together.

(d)

(R. Yosi): Cords of purple wool may not be tied around a linen shirt, as one stitches it before tying it.

(e)

One may not tie a strip of wool together with a strip of linen in order to gird his loins, even if there is a (leather) strap between the two.

The prohibition of Kilayim applies to weavers' marks and launderers' marks.

(Gemara) Question: (Since if they have already been combed together they are prohibited) let it teach only 'Shua' without 'Tavui'?

Answer: If so, we would have said that merely being spun would be permitted; but that isn't true, as the Mishnah states that there's a prohibition of Kilayim if it is spun and woven (even if it hadn't been combed).

Question: Let the Mishnah merely teach 'Sha'at' (which includes combing and spinning) and not 'Nuz', which is weaving?

Answer: If so, we would have said that weaving is permitted, but that isn't true, as the Mishnah states that one may not attach an edging of wool to a linen garment as they appear to have been woven together (which shows that merely woven together is prohibited).

Question: Let the Mishnah merely teach 'T'nez' (which includes spinning and weaving) and not 'Shua' (which is combing)?

R. Yosi taught in the Mishnah that cords of purple wool may not be tied around a linen shirt. Another text teaches that it is permitted. (They don't disagree.) The one who prohibited was referring to when the cords are sown into the shirt. The one who permitted was when it merely tightened and tied over top of the shirt (but the shirt is still removable).
