The Mishnah taught: Except for shaving the beard, rounding the corners of the head and a Kohen becoming impure to a corpse (for which women are exempt).

(b)

Isi: They are also exempt from the prohibition of making a bald spot in the hair in mourning over the dead.

(c)

Question: What is his source?

1.

Answer: The pasuk states (Vayikra 21, 5), "They shall not make a bald spot on their heads (and they shall not shave the edges of their beard)''- whoever cannot shave their beard cannot make a bald spot; since women do not have beards, they are not prohibited from making a bald spot.

2.

Answer #2: The pasuk states (Devarim 14, 1), "(You are) sons (of Hash-m your G-d, you shall not make a bald spot etc.)'' - this applies to sons and not daughters.

(d)

R. Elazar: Women are prohibited to make a bald spot.

Question: What is his source?

1.

Answer: The next pasuk after the prohibition states (Devarim 14, 2), "For you are a holy nation to Hash-m your G-d'' - this applies to both men and women.

(f)

Question: What does R. Elazar do with the word "sons''?

(g)

Answer: When Yisrael are doing G-d's will, they are called sons; when they are not, they are not called sons.

(h)

Rav instructed his students, that Rav Hamnuna had instructed, "Tell your wives that when they are standing beside the dead, they should not tear out their hair, so that they do not come to the prohibition of making a bald spot over the death''.

(i)

Question: How large is a bald spot?

1.

Beraisa #1: Any minimal amount.

2.

Beraisa #2: The size of a gris (a bean about 18-19mm in diameter).

(j)

Beraisa #1 understands that the word "bald spot'' implies any minimal amount.

1.

Beraisa #2 learns from the word "bald spot'' in reference to a metzorah (see Vayikra 13, 42). Just as over there it is the size of a gris, so too here.

(k)

R. Yosi bar Mamal: A female Kohen may leave the Land of Israel.

Question: What is his source?

1.

The pasuk states (Vayikra 21, 1), "Say to the Kohanim (i.e. male)'' not the Kohanos (i.e. female). Otherwise, I could conclude that even a female Kohen cannot leave? This cannot be, as the purpose of the Rabbinic prohibition to leave is to prevent impurity, and female Kohanim are not prohibited from becoming impure!

(m)

The Mishnah taught that a sota waves her offering. (When a sota - a suspected adulterous wife - brings her meal offering) the Kohen places his hand underneath hers and she waves the offering.

(r)

Answer #2: Even if he is young there is no problem, as the evil inclination does not usually come for such a momentary act.

(s)

Beraisa (R. Chiya): If a sotah does not have arms, two Kohanim perform the waving on her behalf.
