The gemara on the bottom of eiruvin 9b says תני רב אדא בר אבימי קמיה דר' חנינא קטנה בעשר גדולה באחת עשרה אמר רבינא במופלגין מכותל זה בשנים ומכותל זה בד' . ולימא לבוד מרוח אחת ותשתרי
I was mashma from this that Lavud is up until and including 3 tefachim, or else he could have said that it was 3 tefachim on each side.
The question is that the Gemara in sukkah 22a says מאי מדובללת מבולבלת ותרתי קתני סוכה מבולבלת כשרה וצילתה מרובה מחמתה כשרה אמר אביי לא שנו אלא שאין בין זה לזה שלשה טפחים אבל יש בין זה לזה ג' טפחים פסולה which is mashma that if it is exactly 3 tefachim we don't say lavud ?
Rashi 9b (4 lines from the bottom of the page) writes that the thickness of the walls reduce the 3 tefachim on each side. Therefore there is less than 3 tefachim on each side so we can say lavud; as we do indeed see from Sukkah 22a that if it is exactly 3 tefachim we do not say lavud.
