The Kollel replies:

Dear Larry ,

The following is taken from Seder haDoros, "Atlas Etz Chaim" (Rav Halpren):

a)Rav Yosi - 4th generation Tanna, lived around 150 C.E. Son of Rav Chalafta, one of 5 main Talmidim of R' Akiva together with R 'Meir, R' Yehuda, R' Shimon and R' Elazar. Teacher of R' Yehuda ha'Nasi. Mentioned over 300 times in Mishnayos and Tosefta . Lived in Tzipori. Worked as a tanner of hides (Shabbos 49a). Eliyahu haNavi would visit him. Married his brother's Yevamah and had 5 sons who were Tana'im as well. Argued with Goyim concerning Emunah. His words were said with great reason (Gitin 67a). Was holy and modest (Shabbos 118).

b)Rav Malkiya - Apparently 2nd - 3rd generation Amora of Bavel approximately 270 C.E. Quotes Rav Ada bar Ahava who was a talmid of Rav. Once quoted on his own (Menachos 9b).

c)Rav Malkiyo - also quoted Rav Ada bar Ahava. Was known to Rava. Note :Rav Ada bar Ahava is also found to be quoting Rava, who was a 4th generation Amora in Bavel (350 C.E.). Rashi therefore learns that Rav Ada lived a long life. Tosfos learns that there were two different Rav Ada bar Ahava's. If so, having Rav Malkiyo live in Rava's time and knowing the later (or older) Rav Ada would be possible.

d)Rav Nachman brei d'Rav Ika - The Bach corrects the Girsa to read Rav Chinena brei d'Rav Ika and it is written so in the other 4 places that this is quoted. 5th generation Amora in Bavel. Quotes Abaye and Rava (Berachos 25b). Died after exchange of words with Rav Papa and Rav Huna brei d'Rav Yehoshua (Berachos 58b).

e)Rav Ika - 4th generation Amora in Bavel. Married to sister of Rav Acha bar Yakov. There are at least 3 Rav Ika's:

(1) Rav Ika ar Avin

(2) brei d'Rav Ami

(3) bar Chanina.

It seems our Rav Ika is a fourth. It could be (3) is the father or son of (d).

f) Rav Bivi bar Abaye - 5th generation Amora. Came from town of Mulai. Lived in Bavel around the year 360 C.E. Son of Abaye, who was Rosh Yeshiva of Pumbedisa. Was a Cohen, descendant of Eli. Associated with Rav Papi and Rav Huna brei d'Rav Yehoshua. The Angel of Death frequently visited him (Chagigah 4b). Was injured when he wished to see Shedim. Afterwards he was healed (Berachos 6a). The Aruch pronounced his name Beivoi.

All the best,

Reuven Weiner
