DAF DISCUSSIONS - SHABBOS 35

Boruch Kahan asks:

Rashi says 3 words, "Chalon Kemoy Shepirashti". My question is where - or to put it another way, we know every word of Rashi has Kedushah as well as a Cheshbon so what did Rashi want here where or what is he referring to?

Unless I am being a bit silly, I looked in that Sugya and previously on 34b and cannot find either Kavosoh or Chalon that Rashi tells us 1 is the other.

May I venture to suggest (and please feel free to "Shlog Op") that all Rashi means to say by "ShePirashti" is that previously in Shas I explained that the word Kavosoh is Aramaic for Chalon, ie window, and the previous time is in Mas. Brochos in Perek Haroeh Daf 62A, which in terms of Dafim or time is not very far away from Shabbos 35A.

I AM HAPPY TO BE TOLD THAT I AM TALKING SHTUSIM AS LONG AS YOU EXPLAIN WHAT RASHI WANTS HERE.

Kol Tuv,

Boruch Kahan, London England

The Kollel replies:

Rashi is telling us two things:

1. The translation of the word "Kavosa" is "Chalon," i.e. window. Rashi has not told us this previously in this Sugya.

2. When Rashi writes "Kemo she'Pirashti," he does not mean that he has already explained what the word "Kavosa" means. Rather, he means that he has already explained the idea of the window used in this Sugya -- namely, that the light of the sinking sun in the west shines onto the east in the same way that when the sun shines into a window, the light passes from the window onto the opposite wall.
