DAF DISCUSSIONS - MEGILAH 32

Zev Arye asks:

Is there any reason as to why?

Zev Arye, N.Y.

The Kollel replies:

This question is discussed by the Bach (O.C. 147). He says that according to the opinions that "Golel" refers to bringing out the Sefer Torah and showing it to everyone before Kriyas Ha'Torah (as the Sefardim do), the reason he gets reward equivalent to everyone is because he is the one who is enabling them to proceed to read by bringing out the Sefer Torah. According to the Tur and others who imply that this refers to Hagbah, he explains that since there are many laws involved in Hagbah (not touching the parchment, the seam should be exactly so, and more) one receives more reward. Just as the punishment of a person who does not keep to the laws of Hagbah/Gelilah is mentioned by our Gemara, so too our Gemara mentions that if conversely he does keep the laws he gets a tremendous amount of reward.

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose

Zev Arye asks:

thank you for the information- I also thought maybe because hagbah/gellila is kvod hatora and we know kvod hatora is more than tora(as in the beginning mesechta discussion of bitul talmud tora l'hazuos h'mes l'u) therefore schar hagbe/gellila is kneged kol hakruim.p;ease let me know if this is correct.

thank-you

The Kollel replies:

While I do not know of any sources for your answer, I think it is a nice Torah thought.

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
