Shia Duvid Bergman asks:

Please see

https://www.dafyomi.co.il/berachos/insites/br-dt-038.htm

Can you please elaborate the statement

mashed fruit that is one of the seven species is "sheha'Kol.

when right before you say that

"When the dates are mashed into a somewhat solid paste, the blessing is "Borei Pri ha'Etz,"

Thank you.

The Kollel replies:

Dear Shia Duvid,

The answer to your question is based on the Rashi (38a, D"H Trima Mahu). From Rashi we see that a fruit that is SOMEWHAT mashed retains its original Berachah of Borei Pri HaEitz. Whereas if it has been thoroughly mashed (pulverized/pureed) then it gets only the Berachah of Shehakol. The difference seems to be that if hasn't been thoroughly mashed then it is said to have retained its original form.

With this we can understand the two statements you quote. "...mashed fruit that is one of the seven species is Shehakol..." is talking about completely mashed fruits or vegetables. "...when the dates are mashed into a somewhat solid paste, the blessing is Borei Pri ha'Etz..." is talking about partially mashed dates.

I hope that clarifies it.
