Each Korban has four Avodos which contribute to the Kaparah, the first of which is Shechitah. It must be done in the Azarah. For Kodshei Kodshim (such as Korban Chatas), the Shechitah must be done in the Tzafon (northern part of the Azarah). However, Shechitah does not need to be done by a Kohen. The exception is on Yom Kipur, when the Kohen Gadol must do all of the Avodos, including the Shechitah.
