Why wouldn't someone who throws a vessel from the roof and it breaks when it hits the ground be patur because of grama? Or is he chayav because of garmi? Or is it an actual maisa?

The Rambam (Hilchos Chovel u'Mazik 6:10) writes that one who damages someone else's property by throwing a rock or shooting an arrow at it is considered as if he damaged it b'Yado (with his own hand). Throwing an object from a roof is at least as serious as throwing a rock at an object (Tosfos here), so it is his Ma'aseh.
