DAF DISCUSSIONS - SUKAH 9

Mordechai Abisror asks:

it says in the mishna that an old sucah has to be more than thirty days old to be considered old. the mishna also says that if you had in mind it should be used for sucot then it is kosher even if you built in the begging of the year. what does that mean in the begging of the year, the begining of the year was only 15 days ago, but the mishna said 30 days is considered old, so how can the mission say "even in the begging of the year it's good" that's obvious the mishna just said 30 days is old 15 days old is obvious

Mordechai Abisror, Long Branch, U.S.A.

The Kollel replies:

In this context, "the beginning of the year" certainly does not mean Rosh Hashanah, as you correctly point out. What it means is that he made it a long time ago. It could be that he made it at the beginning of the summer, which is the normal season of the year when one might make a sukah, or it could even mean that he made the sukah immediately after the end of the Chag of Sukot. Since he made it in mind that it should be used for Sukot, it is kosher.
