DAF DISCUSSIONS - GITIN 7

Julian Hurwitz asked:

Does the pasuk from hosea also refer to a ben torah enjoying music from a non-jewish source,I understand that there is a teshuvah in iggros moshe in this regard-please amplify and give the reference.

Is the passuk from Isiah the source that one shouldn't eat/drink and listen to music except at a seudat mitzvah-does this apply to both live and non-live music; Is this zecher le churrban and what is the current application today ie is it a chumrah.

Rabbi Israel P. Feinhandler replies:

Dear Julian,

Our custom is as written in the Ramah 560:3 that the prohibition is only for listening to music in the manner of kings, who are very accustomed to listen on a consistent basis (the Isur applies regardless of the source of the music, whether it be Jewish or non-Jewish), or in taverns (while drinking and eating). The source is from the Tur there. (See Igros Moshe OC 1:166. For a broader survey of the topic, see the Daf-Insights to Sotah 48a.)

Regarding your second question, it seems that even non-live music applies (so writes the modern Poskim, such as the Shevet ha'Levi), but as mentioned the custom is as above.
