DAF DISCUSSIONS - KESUVOS 2

Eliahu Bohadana asks:

Shalom,

During my last havrusa of ketubot, I asked myself a question that my friend and I could not decide (although I though it was quite obvious in the beginning).

If the one year period after the kidduchin falls on thursday, it is quite obvious for me that the husband should enjoy no rabanan protection if he decides to report his wedding to next Wednesday, since his last "marriable day" is the wednesday preceding the end of his year, and thus he has no "strenght" to move from his thursday to next wednesday and not give mezonot to the wife (thus in this case he SHOULD pay mezonot to his wife right after thursday)

Am I right?

Thanks a lot for your answer.

And congratulations for this site, it's a great job.

The Kollel replies:

Sholom Rav.

If the one year period ends on Sunday, even though he could marry her and, if necessary, go to Beis-Din on Monday, the Gemara says that this is not permissible, since Chazal fixed the marriage-date on Wednesday. Consequently, the husband is not obligated to feed her. How much more so if that period ends on Thursday (when he could not go to Beis-Din on Friday, since they do not sit on Friday), can he not marry her until the following Wednesday. Consequently, he is not obligated to feed her.
