How will we reconcile this Pasuk with Pasuk 25, which stated that the Cana'ani and the Amaleki lived in the valley?

1.

Chizkuni #1: Most of the Cana'anim and Amaleikim lived in the valley, but some lived in the mountain. 1

2.

Chizkuni #2: They really lived in the valley; but when they heard that Yisrael were on the verge of attacking them, they ascended the mountain to ambush them. 2

1

Chizkuni: This is borne out by the words "ha'Yoshev ba'Har ha'hu", in Pasuk 45, implying that some of them lived elsewhere.

2

The question - on both Pesukim - remains however, that when the spies returned, they informed the people that Amalek dwells in the south and the Cana'ani by the sea (in the west). See 13:29.

2)

Why does the Pasuk use the double Lashon "Vakum Vayaksum"

1.

Rashi: To teach us that they smote them again and again. 1

1

Rashi: "Vayaksum" is from the word "Va'ekos oso Tachon" (and I ground it finely) in Devarim 9:21.

3)

What is the significance of "Chormah", which has not been mentioned until now?

1.

Rashi: They called it 'Chormah' 1 as a result of this episode.

2.

Targum Yonasan: "Ad Chormah" means 'until they destroyed them'.

1

A Lashon of ''Cherem' (which has connotations of destruction).
