Why did Moshe visit Dasan and Aviram?

Rashi: In the hope that they would honor him, 1 but they did not.

Rashbam: In the hope that they would do Teshuvah.

Targum Yonasan: In order to rebuke them.

To talk with them, and convince them to retract (PF). Hadar Zekenim (in Pasuk 12): Moshe sent for them, but they refused to come. He now hoped that if he goes to them, they would honor him. Rosh: This teaches us that one should not allow a Machlokes to fester. Refer to 16:25:2:1.

How will we reconcile Moshe's going to Dasan and Aviram with the principle 'Melech she'Machal al Kevodo, Ein Kevodo Machul'?

Torah Temimah: Refer to 16:25:1:3. We see from here that stopping a Machlokes overrides the principle.

Oznayim la'Torah (based on the Yerushalmi Horayos, Perek 3): Because in the time of a rebellion, the king loses his status, and it is appropriate for him to speak to the rebels to try and bring them back. 1

Who were the elders who followed Moshe?

Oznayim la'Torah: They were the seventy elders who were chosen to 'carry the burden of the people together with Moshe', 1 and who now followed him in support.
