Rashi: Moshe asked Hashem to inform him whether He would answer him or not. 1 And Hashem replied in the affirmative, and that this is how He would cure her.

Seforno: Moshe asked Hashem whether, in order to spare Miriam the embarrassment, He would not cure her immediately without having to send her out of the Camp, to which Hashem replied that the embarrassment was an intrinsic part of her atonement. 2

Riva (in Pasuk 2, citing R. Tuvya citing the Sifri): Hashem responded 'I placed her in Hesger; I will make her Muchlat, and I will exempt her'.

Why did Hashem mention what Miriam's father would have done?

Rashi: To teach us that, although if her father would be angry with her, he would have placed her in quarantine for seven days, 1 in which case, now that the Shechinah was angry with her, she ought to be quarantined for fourteen days, 2 she will only be quaranteened for seven days. 3

And this also hints at the Din that the minimum period of Nezifah (a lower degree of Cherem) is seven days (Mo'ed Katan, 47a).

If, based on a Kal va?Chomer, Miriam should have been quarantined for fourteen days, why was she only quarantined for seven?

Rashi: Due to the principle 'Dayo le'Ba min ha'Din Lih'yos ka'Nidon', 1 which overrides the Kal va'Chomer - even if it means negating it completely.

What are the connotations of the words "Achar Te'asef"?

Rashi: Whenever the Torah uses the term 'Asifah' in connection with Metzora'im, it always means to be gathered back into the camp.

Rashi writes that if her father were angry with her, she would be shut up for seven days. Why should she be shut up for 14 for angering the Shechinah?

Da'as Zekenim, Hadar Zekenim citing R. Tam, Rosh 1 (from Nidah 31a): A father contributes five things to the baby, and Hashem, twice as many. 2

Moshav Zekenim #1: Once she will be shut up for more than seven, she needs another seven, for Hesger is not less than seven days. 3

Moshav Zekenim #2: A day of Hashem is like 1000 years. The Torah said 14, for after she two weeks of Hesger she becomes Muchlat, and is Tamei forever.

'Fourteen' is not precise. It means, more than we find through Hesgerim, for a Metzora is Musgar at most twice, i.e. 13 days, since the seventh day counts [as a full day] for both Hesgerim. (Perhaps this is the answer that Da'as Zekenim and Hadar Zekenim bring from R. Baruch ? PF.)

Rashi writes that if Mitiam's father would be angry with her, she would be shut up for seven days. What is the source for this?

Da'as Zekenim: A father being angry with her (Nezifah) is like Menudah, who is like an Aveil, which is for seven days. 1

Da'as Zekenim: When Moshe was cast into the river Nile, Amram thumped her on the head and said 'Where is your prophecy [that my son will save Yisrael]?!' She stood "me'Rachok", like a Metzora, who is distanced for seven days. 2 In Mo'ed Katan (16a), we learn from "Tikalem Shiv'as Yamim" that Nezifah of Rabanan is seven days.

Da'as Zekenim: This is difficult, for the seven days of Aveilus are mid'Rabanan. Also her father was not alive at the time! We can say, if he were alive, she would be shut up for seven days. (What is the source that Amram was dead? Above, Da'as Zekenim connotes that he remarried after Matan Torah ? refer to 11:27:151:1 and the note there. ? PF)

Da'as Zekenim: It does not say "Rachok" regarding a Metzora! Perhaps we learn from "v'Yashav mi'Chutz l'Ohalo Shiv'as Yamim" (Vayikra 14:8).
